Chappell Roan didn’t show a laid-back or nonchalant response when a music industry exec criticized her Grammy acceptance speech.
Roan shared a reaction on her Instagram Stories to an article in Hollywood Reporter that sparked widespread attention due to its criticism of her speech at the Grammy Awards, where she criticized major record labels for their unfair treatment of emerging artists. She urged these companies to offer a fair living wage and healthcare benefits to these young musicians.
In the original text, Jeff Rabhan criticized Roan for showing innocence and targeting the system that propelled her to success, stating: “If record labels are responsible for artists’ salaries, healthcare, and overall welfare, where does it stop and personal responsibility start? Should a record label also provide comforts like a mint on the pillow and bedtime stories? It is not morally or ethically right for record labels to be expected to cover extra expenses beyond advances and royalties.”
Jeff Rabhan pointed out Roan’s display of inexperience and attacking the system that helped her rise, saying: “If record labels are responsible for artists’ income, healthcare, and overall well-being, where should personal responsibility come into play? Should record labels also provide comforting gestures like a mint on the pillow or tucking an artist in at night? There is no ethical or moral duty that obligates record labels to supply additional funds beyond advances and royalties.
On Friday, Roan challenged Rabhan on social media: “Would you like to go head-to-head with a $25K donation to aid struggling artists? I’ll keep everyone informed about this exciting development. I will provide proof of my charitable contributions. In the meantime, let me introduce some artists who deserve more attention and wider exposure.” Afterward, Roan showcased Hemlock Springs, Sarah Kinsley, Devon Again, and Baby Storme. She also included Rabhan’s social media handle, inviting her followers to share their opinions on this topic.
2024 saw THR recognize Roan as one of the top victors in Hollywood, while they simultaneously published an opposing perspective piece penned by songwriter Kay Hanley on the same topic.
Hanley wrote: “Perhaps he was musing: ‘A budding artist; a fresh talent, she’s appeared out of nowhere and seems baffled by our ways here. Let me, the experienced music industry executive in my mid-50s, clarify things.’ He then outlined some harsh financial truths that young artists often face. Later on, he commented: ‘Roan truly deserved her stage time and utilized it more intelligently than anyone I’ve witnessed in my 35-year career in music. Record labels, it’s high time for you to adapt. The world just heard a groundbreaking shot from a 26-year-old legend. Best of luck.’
