As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can relate to Cher’s tales of working with difficult directors. The gaming world is not far from Hollywood when it comes to power dynamics and creative differences. Just like Cher, I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with game developers who were as arrogant as Peter Bogdanovich or as puzzling as the director from ‘The Muppets.’
Cher is looking back on the two directors she didn’t like working with.
In a recently published interview by the U.K.’s Times, coinciding with the launch of her two-part autobiography, the artist opened up about her acting journey and the challenges she faced while collaborating with specific directors on certain projects.
She mentioned that there were only two directors she didn’t care for: Peter Bogdanovich and the one from “The Muppets.” She recalled her disagreements with Bogdanovich during the filming of “Mask” in 1985, as well as her conflicts with Frank Oz on the set of “Mermaids” in 1990. Regarding the director of “The Muppets,” she admitted to his dismissal from the project. She stated that it was either him or her who had to leave, which was unfortunate because he’s a talented director, but he held a grudge against her. He often said, “At least my wife loves me!
About the late Bogdanovich, who passed away in 2022, Cher went on to say, “He was a difficult man. He wasn’t kind to the actresses during filming and he had an overbearing sense of self-importance. I genuinely disliked him.
In a 2019 interview with Vulture, Bogdanovich suggested that Cher may have felt the same way about him, as he shared that Cher was wary of everyone, particularly men. He explained that this is why she chose to drop her father’s last name, Sarkisian.
During the shooting of the movie “Mask”, Cher reminisced, “He asks me, ‘Cher, where do you think we should shoot this scene?’ To which I suggest, ‘The kitchen seems to be working well, why not try it there again?’ The next day, he shows up on set with an egg sandwich in hand, shouting that he won’t let me direct this film; I’m insignificant; he can dismiss me at any time. Oh yes, he was a real pig.
She went on to explain, “I recommend speaking to everyone: I’m extremely cooperative in my work. I don’t act capriciously with my words, as it’s crucial to follow the director’s vision until it’s necessary to express your own thoughts. Meryl Streep suggests that if a director asks you to do something you dislike, you respond: yes, yes, yes, I’ll do it that way. Then, you execute it according to your plan, and they often don’t realize the change. I’ve collaborated with directors like Bob Altman, Mike Nichols, and Norman Jewison… all exceptional talents whom I hold in high regard. I understand when to stay silent.
This November, it’s been revealed that Dey Street Books, a division of the William Morrow Group at HarperCollins Publishers, plans to release the initial installment of a two-part memoir.
For over 70 years, Cher has strived to live life on her own terms. Now, she’s sharing her heartfelt journey in a two-part memoir titled ‘Cher: The Memoir‘, the publisher hints. With her signature candor and wit, this book follows how the ‘diamond in the rough’ achieved success against all odds, transforming into the iconic figure who has captivated the world for over five decades without a clear plan or much confidence.
The forthcoming autobiography will trace the singer’s life from childhood through meeting and marrying Sonny Bono, delving into “the intricate and tumultuous bond that propelled them to global stardom, but ultimately led to their separation.
The memoir has generated much excitement since she hinted at writing it back in 2017. Last year, when she provided an update to The Hollywood Reporter, Cher jokingly commented, “Well, we’re almost done because [HarperCollins] asks, ‘Cher, how long are you going to work on this?’ That part is tricky too, but we’re so near completion.
Cher: The Memoir Part 1 is available now. Cher: The Memoir, Part Two will follow in 2025.
