As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many cinematic franchises over the years, I must say, this holiday season promises an exhilarating clash between two titans – Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King has its work cut out for it.
Currently, projections indicate that Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is estimated to earn approximately $55 million during its opening weekend from December 20th to December 22nd. This is in contrast to an anticipated $50 million for “Mufasa: The Lion King” based on data from a leading research firm, National Research Group.
It would be quite surprising if Sonic managed to defeat Mufasa, given that the summer 2019 remake of The Lion King raked in an impressive $191.8 million domestically and ultimately grossed $1.7 billion worldwide. Similar to the film, Mufasa is a live-action movie that heavily relies on photorealistic visuals.
There were numerous doubts about whether the 2019 movie directed by Jon Favreau, much like the current discussions surrounding the upcoming film titled Mufasa, would prove successful.
Disney has delayed its main promotional efforts past Thanksgiving, hoping that ticket sales will gradually rise in the upcoming period. Their final marketing strategy involves screening the movie’s trailer ahead of the newly released Moana 2, which debuted on Wednesday to a spectacular start.
Paramount, similarly, mentions that it has allocated only 5% of its marketing funds towards Sonic 3, with plans to hold off on promotional activities until after Thanksgiving. Notably, the studio is also preparing for the release of Gladiator II around this festive season.
Under the guidance of director Barry Jenkins, the music-rich movie titled “Mufasa” brings back Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé Knowles who initially appeared in the 2019 film. Joining them for the first time are actors Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Thandiwe Newton, Lenni James, Anika Noni rose, and Blue Ivy Carter in her first lead role in a feature film. The movie’s songs were penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The tale unfolds around the escapades of two young lions, Mufasa and Taka, who form a strong bond when Mufasa is left orphaned and welcomed into Taka’s regal family. As the story progresses, Mufasa ascends to the throne as the king of the Pride Lands and becomes Simba’s father, whereas Taka transforms into a villain, earning the moniker Scar.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel proud about the success story that is the Sonic movies. The first live-action/CGI Sonic film, based on the classic Sega game, was a massive hit for Paramount, raking in an impressive $58 million domestically when it debuted in February 2020 – just a month before the pandemic closed down cinemas. It later saw another domestic opening of $72.1 million in March 2022. Interestingly, while Sonic games are traditionally popular among men, the sequel attracted a significant number of families, which means that if there’s a Sonic 3, it could potentially challenge the mighty Mufasa at the box office!
In the newest addition to the Sonic series, Keanu Reeves joins the cast as the iconic game character Shadow. Known for his brooding demeanor, he shares some of the same abilities as the heroic hedgehog, but with a darker twist. The third film sees the franchise’s villain, Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey), in a slump and out of shape. He finds renewed motivation when he creates Shadow to defeat Sonic, who is voiced by Ben Schwartz.
This year, Mufasa and Sonic are set to headline the Christmas countdown calendar. Typically, movies that premiere in the weekend before Christmas don’t have massive debuts because people tend to be busy with their holiday preparations. However, Hollywood studios rely on larger-than-usual multiples as kids are out of school and adults have time off during the year-end festivities, which leads to more repeat viewings.
