It’s been quite some time since we last encountered the gruff tones of Riddick in a video game, but there’s still a glimmer of possibility left.
A subtle revolution within the gaming industry is resurfacing old favorites, marking a time when remastered versions of well-known titles like Persona 4 are reportedly making a comeback. Additionally, there’s talk that The Chronicles of Riddick games could be next in line.
For individuals who experienced them during their time, Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena made a deep impact. They offered immersive, moody adventures that seamlessly blended stealth, intense hand-to-hand combat, and precise shooting – a combination that few games dared to attempt at the time.
During a period when numerous video games based on movies often lacked substance or left little impact, the Riddick series was exceptional in terms of quality and assurance. To this day, these games are still fondly recalled as among the finest standalone storylines from that timeframe.
However, the problem lies in the increasing difficulty of obtaining these games, especially for console gamers who have traditionally relied on physical copies, particularly those who grew up with the Xbox 360. While PC players have enjoyed digital versions for some time now, they’ve had more luck accessing them compared to console fans.
Closing down the Xbox 360 marketplace has left many timeless digital games inaccessible, while the intricate design of the PlayStation 3 remains an obstacle, preventing numerous games from fully realizing their potential on older systems.
Nowadays, Nightdive Studios is well-known for reviving classic video games on contemporary platforms. In recent times, they’ve resurrected titles such as System Shock, Turok 3, Quake 2, and even Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Currently, what stands out about them is their recent move to allow seventh-generation games, opening up possibilities for projects initially developed for Xbox 360 and PS3. They’ve signaled their intention to delve into these older projects. Notably, Nightdive Studio’s leadership has emphasized the importance of preserving games from that era, particularly those that didn’t migrate to PC or more recent consoles.
They highlighted the technical difficulties, particularly those associated with PS3 exclusives, but expressed optimism in their tools such as the KEX engine, which has been instrumental in most of their remastered projects. Moreover, they’ve mentioned a willingness to collaborate closely with original developers to enhance aspects that weren’t successful initially.
The response from the community was immense when Nightdive Studio asked which games they’d like to see remastered next. Games such as The Darkness, Singularity, and Condemned were suggested, but The Chronicles of Riddick stood out repeatedly. These are exactly the types of games that Nightdive excels at—narrative-rich shooters with a distinctive flair and timeless gameplay mechanics.
Unlike some suggestions from fans, the titles of Riddick series don’t require significant changes. A skillfully done remaster could rejuvenate them while preserving their authentic feel. Although community demand doesn’t guarantee anything, it does carry weight. Nightdive Studios has taken fan input into account in the past. If a game garners enough attention, they tend to take notice.

As a diehard fan of the Riddick universe, I can’t help but feel the excitement bubbling as I hear rumors about the upcoming game, Riddick 4: Furya. With the movie side of things stirring back to life, it seems like we might be on the cusp of a synchronized momentum across all media platforms. I can hardly wait!
Please be aware that no definitive commitments have been made as Nightdive Studios is currently managing multiple projects. The acquisition of the rights to develop Riddick (previously published under various labels) might require some complex negotiations behind the scenes.
However, they’ve faced comparable difficulties in the past, and their history demonstrates that they possess the skills needed to accomplish this task successfully.
Nightdive Studios is on the hunt for their upcoming project, and while it might not be unveiled this or even the following year, the possibility remains open. The opportunity hasn’t been definitively ruled out.
And that’s more than we could say a few years ago.
