As a seasoned gamer with a keen interest in both gaming and real-life narratives, I’ve always been drawn to stories that delve deep into human emotions, moral dilemmas, and the complexities of societal structures. The trailer for “Small Things Like These” seems to be a captivating tale that ticks all these boxes, and it has piqued my curiosity.
In the debut trailer for “Small Things Like These,” Cillian Murphy takes on the role of Bill Furlong, a resident coal merchant in a quaint town. This upcoming Irish drama is an adaptation from Claire Keegan’s 2021 novel, and it unfolds as Furlong uncovers a hidden tragedy within the town’s religious community, the nuns.
As he earns a living as a coal dealer to provide for his family, an unsettling truth hidden within the local convent is unveiled by him – revealing personal truths as well. This revelation compels him to revisit his past and challenge the silence of complicity in a small Irish town under the influence of the Catholic Church.
The narrative finds its foundation in the Irish Magdalene Laundries, institutions where women labeled as immoral or promiscuous according to Roman Catholic norms were compulsorily confined.
Completing our principal actors are Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Emily Watson, Clare Dunne, and Helen Behan. The director is Tim Mielants, working with a screenplay penned by Enda Walsh.
Watch the trailer for Small Things Like These above. The film premieres in theaters on November 8.
