Cobra Kai Star Ralph Macchio Knew CGI Miyagi Scene Would Be Controversial

Time has elapsed since the conclusion of Cobra Kai, a series finale that left fans worldwide content, as Johnny claimed his triumph, Kreese and Silver faced their destiny, and Daniel paid tribute to Miyagi by displaying greater virtue. Remarkably, Daniel’s mentor made an appearance through the wonders of CGI and AI at a crucial juncture, offering sage advice. The choice to revive this iconic character wasn’t without debate, and now Ralph Macchio, who has portrayed Daniel LaRusso throughout the entire franchise, discloses that he anticipated criticism but carried on regardless.

Macchio discussed with “The Direct” at Paleyfest about Miyagi’s debatable comeback on the Netflix martial arts comedy sensation. Regardless of appearances, he desired to share a scene with his mentor in the show that rejuvenated the franchise.

I’d like to clarify my thoughts on this matter. My primary issue is that I wanted Daniel to be fighting alongside Mr. Miyagi, but we didn’t have enough budget for it. In terms of dialogue, what was important to me was the bond between them and the mental trigger that would set off the action, rather than a physical confrontation. Essentially, the scene I envisioned is more about their mental connection, as it takes place primarily in Daniel’s mind.

The actor discussed the significant scene featuring Miyagi in the series, specifically the moment when the digitally enhanced version of the character first emerged during the Sekai Taikai tournament after Miyagi delivered the decisive blow to another competitor. Fans were thrilled, yet it might have been due to the brief duration of this scene. In a dream sequence where Daniel and Miyagi battle villains dressed as skeletons, the AI representation is more noticeable. This was what Macchio mentioned about this particular scene:

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself deeply engrossed in exploring Daniel’s descent into this enigmatic world, fueled by his quest for truth about his mentor. This journey took him on an intriguing odyssey, one that required him to delve deep and unravel the mystery, all while his mentor was not physically present. It was a challenging yet thrilling experience for me as a storyteller, especially considering the demanding schedule we were working under. We had just an hour and a half to shoot the entire skeleton scene, which was both emotional and exhilarating. It was rewarding to be part of this intriguing narrative.

Is the New ‘Karate Kid’ Movie Connected to ‘Cobra Kai’?

In 2025, on May 30th, the much-loved martial arts series that started with “The Karate Kid” (directed by John G. Avildsen in 1984) will come back to life as “Karate Kid: Legends”. This new film features the return of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, who are reprising their roles from the franchise as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han. “Legends” is set within the same universe as the original movie and acknowledges the 2010 remake as part of its storyline.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement for “Karate Kid: Legends,” which, although seemingly disconnected from “Cobra Kai” at first glance, shares ties through a familiar face – Daniel LaRusso. He continues his journey towards enlightenment as a sensei, guided by the wisdom of Mr. Miyagi. However, there could be hidden links to “Cobra Kai” that remain unveiled for now. The secrets are set to unfold when the movie graces our screens in May.
