❗️CAUTION: This article reveals significant plot points from the conclusion of Drew Hancock’s movie “Companion”. Viewer discretion is advised if you haven’t watched it yet, read on at your own peril!
Sophie Thatcher’s character Iris undergoes an extraordinary transformation in the movie “Companion.” Initially, she is a robot designed to obey her owner/boyfriend, Jack Quaid’s Josh. However, during their wild escapade at the lake house, she develops self-reliance and wealth. The film concludes with Iris killing Josh and departing towards an optimistic future, though it’s not a sequence of events that Hancock, the writer/director, finds compelling enough for a sequel.
In the current scenario, there’s neither a technological revolution nor a significant political push for robot rights. Instead, life is being lived as harmoniously as possible. As shown in the video above, during the pre-release press event for Companion in Los Angeles, I asked Drew Hancock about his thoughts on Iris’ future, and he shared his reasons for doubting he will create a Companion 2. The filmmaker expressed these views himself.
A much less exciting continuation might be expected. Instead, her vision is to sell the $12 million she earned, purchase a farm, and thereafter live a simple life, preparing meals for herself that she often doesn’t eat. She seems content with this passive existence, appreciating sunsets and not involving herself in any robot rebellion. Essentially, it’s about her living out an idyllic version of human retirement.
Companion Review: Twists, Blood, Fun, And A Phenomenal Sophie Thatcher Performance
In simpler terms, I understand that saying “I love it” for Iris might seem clichéd in today’s internet lingo, but I genuinely feel that way. Throughout her relationship with Josh, she endures some truly terrifying experiences, and it’s not fair to expect her to transform the world on her own after gaining independence. Instead, she could let others tackle global change, as she ponders deeply about her identity following encounters with a robot similar to herself on the road at the film’s end.
Additionally, it’s possible that Iris possesses a characteristic that many of us might not share: an unwavering contentment. As a robot, she is devoid of feelings like boredom or anxiety, allowing her to relish the repetition of each day without any distress and simply find joy in her existence.
But is that a good movie? As Drew Hancock put it,
It seems unlikely that Warner Bros. would approve of that rendition, as it’s my take on a follow-up story to “Companion.
Alongside Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, “Companion” features Harvey Guillen, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, and Rupert Friend as well. If you missed seeing this 2025 horror masterpiece on the big screen after its January release or simply want to revisit it, you can now do so from the comfort of your home by digitally renting or purchasing it from popular online platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango At Home, and Apple.
