As a long-time fan of soulful melodies and powerful vocal performances, I can hardly contain my excitement for Bilal’s intimate concert film, Bilal: Live at Glasshaus. Having grown up on the neo-soul movement that Bilal helped shape, his music has been a constant companion throughout my life. From “Soul Sista” to his Grammy-winning collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, Bilal’s artistry has touched my soul in ways few others have managed.
On November 20th, the premiere of the intimate live performance film starring Grammy-winning artist Bilal, titled “Bilal: Live at Glasshaus“, is set to take place.
Glasshouse has shared that their concert film, showcasing collaborations with Bilal’s nearest musical partners such as Questlove, Common, Robert Glasper, and Burniss Travis, is set to debut on their YouTube platform.
Bilal expressed feeling confident to produce his work due to having exceptional musicians around him, he told The Hollywood Reporter. He prefers an intimate atmosphere where everyone feeds off the room’s energy. When performing and sharing, he said, it generates a continuous flow of energy. As an artist, he aims to create a lasting moment by establishing this energetic circle.
The concert movie titled “Bilal: Live at Glasshaus ” was recorded in December last year in front of an audience of 100 fans. The film’s summary goes like this: “Bilal: Live at Glasshaus ” is a celebration of Bilal’s exceptional vocal and musical versatility, as well as his underrated role as a pioneer in contemporary music. This movie showcases Bilal in his respected position as ‘the artist that other artists admire,’ with the storyline influenced by the testimonies of Questlove, Common, and Glasper, who have observed his genius for more than two decades.
In the early 2000s, Bilal became a significant figure in the neo-soul scene and dropped his first studio album, titled “1st Born Second“, in 2001. The record boasted the popular track “Soul Sista” and collaborations with Questlove, Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Marsha Ambrosius, Common. He received a Grammy for best rap/sung collaboration in 2016 as a guest feature on Kendrick Lamar’s “These Walls.” Bilal’s newest album, “Adjust Brightness“, came out in September.
In an interview with THR, Questlove praises Bilal as one of the most genuine, truthful artists in performance today, stating that he is fearless and a privilege to work with. Bilal, according to Questlove, is revered by many renowned musicians such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper, Pharrell Williams, Solange, Terrence Blanchard, and others. They all recognize his exceptional talent and have made use of it, while Bilal has raised the bar for singing in his own unique way.
Bilal possesses a rare, extraordinary talent that sets him apart from many others worldwide. Few people can match his abilities, as he’s been able to express his individuality distinctly in his work since a young age.
The film “Bilal: Live at Glasshaus” was steered by its director, producer, and editor, Jarrett Wetherell, founder of Glasshaus. Known for collaborating with artists such as The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, and SZA, Chase Smith handled the cinematography.
Wetherell states to THR that this movie is like a heartfelt tribute to an exceptional singer from our era. Bilal’s portrayal carries a rare vulnerability, something seldom seen among artists these days. The film offers an intimate glimpse into the studio sessions with these five musical legends, making you feel as if you’re right there in the midst of their music and their moment. Glasshaus is thrilled to showcase this production, dedicated to Bilal.
