As a supporter speaking about the recent events:

I’ve personally witnessed an incredible surge in viewership for the movie Conclave, following the sad news of Pope Francis‘ passing on April 21 at the age of 86. Interestingly, this film, released in 2024, is a fictional portrayal of the aftermath of a Pope’s death and the ensuing highly secretive papal election. Directed by Edward Berger, it boasts an impressive cast featuring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, Lucian Msamati, Isabella Rossellini, and Jacek Koman. This captivating production garnered numerous Oscar nominations before ultimately taking home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

According to Wired and data from Luminate, there was a significant surge in viewers for the film “Conclave” following the death of Pope Francis. The number of minutes watched on April 20 was 1.8 million, but this skyrocketed to 6.9 million on April 21. Similarly, Netflix’s movie “The Two Popes” experienced an increase in viewership, with a rise of 417% following the same event.
