Constantine’s Director Offers Thrilling Update On Keanu Reeves Sequel

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the obscure and underrated, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing the news about the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 gem, Constantine. Like many others who have witnessed its dark allure, I’ve found myself questioning time and again why this movie, which feels more like a forgotten chapter in DC lore, has been overlooked by so many.

To those few who’ve watched the 2005 movie “Constantine”, my immediate reaction is usually, “Did you realize it’s a DC film?” The second thought that follows is often, “It’s a pity this film didn’t get more recognition, as a sequel would truly be something special.” Fortunately, director Francis Lawrence has some thrilling updates regarding the upcoming DC movie.

Approximately two decades following its initial premiere, a sequel for the less popular DC and Warner Bros. Pictures film “Constantine” is now being developed. In a conversation with ComicBook, director Francis Lawrence discussed the process of reviving this series. He mentioned that the road to bringing this franchise back to life was a long one, as he explained in these words:

Essentially, about our 15th anniversary or thereabouts, we gathered for a Zoom meeting and decided to revive our project. We’ve been more engaged with it since then, overcoming various obstacles along the way. Now, we’re actively developing a new script. It’s not that we believe the world is suddenly ready for it; rather, I think our fan base has grown significantly over the years, and it’s become something of a cult classic. This has been quite fascinating to observe, although strange at times. Yet, our passion for this project has never wavered, and we’re now back in action with the script development.

Over the years, Constantine has gained quite the cult following, because at the time, the movie was met with mixed reactions. It was one of those either you hate it or you love it movies, and it certainly does not feel like a DC movie at all. Also, not many people know much about the history of the DC exorcist and sorcerer, so the first hurdle would have been making a convincing argument that people actually want to see it. Granted, that was somewhat cleared since there was a brief Constantine show, and while didn’t last long, Matt Ryan’s version of the character was later brought into the Arrowverse. The second hurdle was that the Constantine 2 script was put on pause because of the writer’s strike, a hurdle we have now thankfully long cleared.

During the interview, Lawrence mentioned that he, along with Keanu Reeves and producer Akiva Goldsman, were eager to delve deeper into the universe portrayed in the film and capitalize on its R rating. This statement is quite intriguing, considering how terrifying the movie was, as I can attest – Beeman indeed! The chills I got from watching it still linger. Lawrence himself admitted:

Initially, our production ended up being classified as R even though we aimed for a PG-13 film and adhered to its guidelines. So, we thought, “Why not challenge ourselves further?” and decided to create a sequel with an emphasis on an authentic R-rating. In other words, we said, “Let’s go for it! Give us the opportunity to truly make an R-rated movie.

In response to a question about changing his hair color for the sequel of “Constantine,” Reeves evaded a direct answer due to the controversy surrounding his casting at the time. At present, the script for “Constantine 2” is still in development without a confirmed release date or production start. If you haven’t already, I strongly advise watching the original movie, which is available for rent or purchase on digital platforms.
