As a seasoned connoisseur of the silver screen and a devotee of DC’s rich lore, I must say that the latest announcements have sent my heart racing like a Bat-signal through the night. The prospect of James Gunn’s unique touch on the Creature Commandos series is already intriguing, but the tantalizing glimpses of our beloved heroes, particularly Batman, have me on the edge of my seat.
The new animated series titled “Creature Commandos” hails from DC and is the creative brainchild of James Gunn. It revolves around an eclectic group of villains and anti-heroes who are attempting to protect our world. Even with its somewhat recognizable premise, it promises to be an exciting debut for DC Studios, the fresh identity of the DC Universe. Fervent enthusiasts of the original content, who were recently granted a glimpse of some renowned heroes, such as Batman, can’t wait to see more!
In episode 4 of “Creature Commandos”, Circe (Anya Chalotra) presents Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) with a grim vision of the future where DC’s top superheroes, including Wonder Woman, Starfire, Superman, and many others, are defeated by the world’s most formidable villains. This glimpse into the future offers fresh perspectives on these iconic characters. The scene also provides a sneak peek at Batman, who is seen with an oversized cape that largely conceals his figure. Although it’s difficult to discern his appearance clearly, his comic-accurate cowl and bat ears leave no doubt about his identity. The enigmatic unveiling of Batman might disappoint fans expecting a clearer look at other heroes, but it also allows DC Studios the freedom to decide how and when to fully reveal their take on the Caped Crusader to the public.
As an ardent fan, I’ve always cherished the idea of seeing another familiar Batman step into the limelight within the DC Universe, similar to the portrayal by Robert Pattinson. However, it appears a fresh interpretation is about to steal the show on the big screen. Initially, James Gunn considered merging Matt Reeves’ Batman into the DC Universe, but the cameo in Creature Commandos hints at a dramatically different Dark Knight. Although there might be hints in Superman, it’s officially confirmed that Batman will make his debut in the DCU through another film on the DC Studios schedule.
The DCU’s Batman Will Lead ‘Brave and the Bold’
Directed by Andy Muschietti, known for The Flash, comes the upcoming DCU film Brave and the Bold. This movie will bring Batman together with his son Damian Wayne, who will assume the Robin role. Although the script is not yet complete and the film does not have an official release date, it’s still a confirmed project on the movie slate. While The Batman remains an Elseworlds title, Brave and the Bold promises to showcase a likely more fantastical version of the character. The infamous villain Clayface, who has his own film in development with a finished script by horror specialist Mike Flanagan, also exists within the same DCU as Brave and the Bold.
In the year 2028, we’ll see a new Batman-themed film titled “Dynamic Duo” joining the DCU lineup. This stop-motion animated movie will star both former Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and will share the same universe as Superman and Brave and the Bold. In episode 4 of Creature Commandos, you’ll notice Robin meeting a tragic end in an apocalyptic future. It’s worth mentioning that this marks the first time in decades that the Batfamily will appear on the big screen in live-action.
