Critics Are All Over Nicole Kidman In Her New Netflix Series The Perfect Couple, And As A Fan Of The Book I’m Over The Moon

As a seasoned gamer of books, movies, and TV shows, I can confidently say that when a beloved author’s work comes to life on screen, it’s like finding a rare gem amidst common pebbles. Waking up to the news of Netflix’s latest series, The Perfect Couple, starring none other than Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, was nothing short of exhilarating. I’ve been following Elin Hilderbrand’s work for a few years now, and she’s my go-to author for intriguing beach reads set on Nantucket. The Perfect Couple is among her Top 3 books, with 28 Summers and Golden Girl holding the top spots in my heart.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t express how exhilarating it is when a cherished work of fiction makes its way onto the big or small screen, especially when it’s done well. This morning, I found myself beaming from ear to ear upon learning about Netflix’s latest series, “The Perfect Couple,” starring the exceptional duo, Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber. Today marks its debut on Netflix, making it one of the must-watch projects gracing our screens this week, September 2-8

Listen, not only do I love when Kidman signs on for a thriller, I’m also excited this got six episodes rather than a small screen movie. Netflix has a reasonably good track record when it comes to adapting books – OK I’m mostly thinking of the installments in the Bridgerton series – and this is a doozy of a book.

If you haven’t encountered Elin Hilderbrand yet, she’s an author known for crafting engaging beach reads that are a bit more intricate than the average. For me, “The Perfect Couple” ranks among her Top 3 (with “28 Summers” being my personal favorite and “Golden Girl” coming in second). I stumbled upon her work a couple of years back and have since read numerous titles by her. Given that there’s a new book-to-screen adaptation coming up in 2024, it seems perfectly timed, and even if the adaptations were mediocre, I probably would have watched them anyway. However, they’re not just mediocre; they’re excellent!

To set the record straight: I haven’t caught it just yet. I opted out of receiving screeners and preferring to wait until weekends for viewing. The anticipation is high based on the praises from fellow reviewers, so it promises to be quite enjoyable

The Critics Like That Nicole Kidman Is Doing Something Different

The main event in “The Perfect Couple” is undeniably a wedding, where Nicole Kidman portrays Greer – a well-known author and mother of the groom. She exhibits a feisty and sometimes sharp personality, which has been met with great acclaim by critics. Kristen Baldwin from Entertainment Weekly, in particular, is highly impressed by it

Nicole Kidman’s character portrayal has never been cruel or unkind. Instead, it’s intriguing to see her embody the hidden malice of her character, Greer, a nastiness that seems to arise from a hidden, sinister secret, even her own family is unaware of

According to Nina Metz from the Chicago Tribune, Nicole Kidman delivers an exceptional performance in this role as a well-to-do mother who tends to be wary of strangers, even though her child is on the verge of marrying one. Maintaining social appearances is something she’s accustomed to

Nicole Kidman brilliantly portrays a haughty yet magnificent character, a high-society snob who remains unfazed yet carries an undercurrent of tension that could potentially break her. Known as a renowned author specializing in murder mysteries (an ironic twist!), she is the one who sustains this luxurious lifestyle

Can’t wait.

Plenty Of Critics Are Having Fun With The Perfect Couple’s Plot, Too

Indeed, the aspect I find most delightful about “The Perfect Couple” was beautifully expressed by Lucy Mangan from The Guardian. She not only praises Donna Lynne Champlin’s portrayal of Det Nikki Henry but also makes a daring assertion concerning fruit baskets

The Ideal Duo boasts a well-structured storyline with plenty of extra intrigue. The merry-go-round of potential culprits spins and presents clues at perfectly timed intervals; if there’s someone who can resist marathoning through all six episodes once they’ve begun, I’d be happy to munch on a fruit platter

Some publications label “The Perfect Couple” as “trash,” which might not sound appealing at first. However, despite this apparent criticism, they tend to use the term in a favorable manner, considering the storyline of the book. For instance, The Telegraph’s Benji Wilson frequently employs the word “ludicrously,” but his writing suggests an appreciation for the novel, given its engaging plot (and let me add that it is indeed brilliantly penned by Hilderbrand)

Despite its flawed nature, “The Perfect Couple” delivers top-quality trashy entertainment. The show is designed to offer quick, indulgent satisfaction, and it succeeds admirably in nearly every scene. The picturesque setting of Nantucket may seem unrealistically beautiful, while the family portrayed are equally unrealistic in their snobbishness and unpleasant demeanor. However, despite their flaws, you’ll find yourself intrigued and eager to uncover the mystery behind them. As summer fades and winter approaches, “The Perfect Couple” serves as the ideal comfort watch – a gripping drama for those who appreciate a good potboiler

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that not everyone seemed to vibe with “The Perfect Couple,” given Indiewire’s C-rating, but let’s face it, the thrill of watching the wealthy and idle tackle crime during a wedding weekend is something that appeals to many. If it manages to be a secret indulgence worth revisiting, count me in!
