The reboot was initially announced by Amazon in October 2021, and the new series is envisioned as a contemporary retelling of the ’90s cult classic film bearing the same name.
In these pictures, you’ll find an array of characters participating in various functions and gatherings. The actors, Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess, will take on the parts of manipulative step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively. Savannah Lee Smith is cast as Annie Grover, a fresh arrival who happens to be the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. How Will The Story of Cruel Intentions Change for the Reboot?
In the initial movie, the siblings’ competitive bond and mutual attraction lead them to place bets and manipulate those around them. Primarily, Kathryn and Sebastian fuel each other’s negative habits and delight in the scandals of high society New York. In their realm, where social standing and reputation are paramount, sex, control, and power serve as interchangeable assets. However, everything changes when Annie enters the narrative and disrupts their game.
The show will revisit the gritty and transformative story, but with a contemporary perspective, adjusting certain aspects of the original plot. In an interview, co-showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher have replaced the Catholic Manhattan private school setting from the movie with a sorority backdrop. The narrative centers around step-siblings trying to preserve their college social standing after a public hazing incident threatens their Greek life membership. The series will delve into the culture of American universities, echoing the essence of the original film while introducing more depth. Topics such as escalating tuition fees, chapter dues, diversity, and LGBTQ+ issues will be explored in the context of today’s society. However, Goodman emphasizes that the series will still retain its timeless qualities.
Although it has a contemporary feel, we don’t engage with social media. Instead, it seems as if our characters are reading old-fashioned newspapers. Our intention was to create an atmosphere that feels timeless.
Instead of saying “This is an intriguing decision,” you could say “This choice stands out in comparison to other series like the 2021’s unsuccessful revival of Gossip Girl on Max, which had trouble delving deeply into the widespread impacts of social media and connecting with viewers.
In the film “Cruel Intentions,” the costume design was highly acclaimed for its unique and vibrant approach to each character. Annie’s wardrobe featured a bright, preppy, and naive color scheme, in contrast to Kathryn and Sebastian’s dark, high-end, all-black outfits. Sarah Michelle Gellar adopted a seductive brunette hairstyle to set her character, Kathryn Merteuil, apart from her well-known role as Buffy from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer.” Earlier this year, when discussing the lasting impact of “Cruel Intentions” on fashion for CNN, Jemal Polson remarked:
In Kathryn’s initial scene, Sarah Michelle Gellar dons a Dolce & Gabbana suit combined with a custom corset that Wingate mentioned was a deliberate reference to the film “Dangerous Liaisons”. Characters were dressed in items from Donna Karan, Gucci, and Calvin Klein. However, Ryan Phillippe’s character, Sebastian, received a large box of clothes from Prada, as the actor had recently modeled for this luxury Italian brand, according to Wingate. Christine Baranski, who portrays Bunny Caldwell, Cecile’s upper-class mother, is seen in suits reminiscent of Chanel, but sourced from St John.
