In one of the popular TV shows on The CW, The Flash, one of its esteemed actors, Tom Cavanagh (known for his role as the Reverse Flash), has openly discussed his opinion about Ezra Miller’s movie version of The Flash, which caused quite a stir in 2023. During a recent convention, he offered an insightful perspective on the Warner Bros. film based on his personal thoughts.
According to Heroic Hollywood, during a Q&A session at Fan Expo in Portland, Cavanagh openly discussed his views on the controversial movie after having seen it. Despite being protective of Grant Gustin’s portrayal of The Flash in the TV series, Cavanagh surprisingly appreciated Miller’s performance in the film. He pointed out the variations in character depiction, stating that each interpretation was unique.
Here’s a simpler way of saying it: “They made him appear less intelligent, which I found clever. However, they did this intentionally to give The Flash a fresh, innocent feel. It was a smart move! After all, you don’t want to replicate what another actor did for a decade on TV.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the film faced a mix of criticism and controversy due to Miller’s legal issues. Yet, it wasn’t just his off-screen drama that sparked debate; the movie was also slammed for its uneven pace, excessive use of CGI, and lackluster story development. The director, Andy Muschietti, pointed the finger at The Flash’s declining popularity for the film’s underperformance at the box office. This assertion ignited a wave of online protests from fans of The Flash, who swiftly reminded us about the long-running and widely loved CW series that just concluded after nine seasons. In comparison, some of DC’s other notable characters haven’t had such a lengthy run on television.
The movie wasn’t entirely panned by critics; it garnered some positive feedback for its comedic elements and action scenes. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 63% Tomatometer score and an impressive 82% Popcornmeter score. Although some fans are eager for 2023’s The Flash to be forgotten from the cultural conversation, others view this rendition as one of the finest in the DC universe prior to James Gunn’s reboot.
The Future of The Flash
James Gunn and Peter Safran have commenced the first chapter of the revamped DC Universe, called “Gods and Monsters.” This chapter includes a total of six TV series and six movies. The acclaim for Barry Allen’s more “naive” or youthful depiction by Cavanagh is intriguing, as fans are wondering if the next live-action portrayal of the superhero will be Wallace “Wally” West, also known as Kid Flash. Sharp-eyed spectators noticed the speedster in a recent episode of Creature Commandos, hidden in a fleeting image of deceased Justice League members. The continuity between the DCU’s animated projects and the upcoming live-action projects is the reason fans are paying close attention for any hints or Easter eggs related to the upcoming films.
In July, Superman makes his appearance, and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of some favorite characters. The film will feature a supporting ensemble of heroes such as Hawkgirl, Guy Gardener, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. Yet, it may be a while before viewers catch glimpses of familiar figures like Wonder Woman, Batman, and The Flash. Rest assured, these characters are still part of the world depicted in the Superman film, even if they don’t appear on screen. It could simply be too soon to reintroduce these characters, as audiences might appreciate a break before meeting a new actor portraying The Flash, given the long-running television series that has spanned nearly a decade.
If Wally West takes over as the new Flash, fans are excited about the prospect of a standalone Flash film potentially being added to Chapter Two of Gunn’s DCU. Although a version of Wally West was briefly featured in the TV show, this could be an opportunity to retell his origin story. Since the series has ended, there is optimism that Barry Allen’s Flash might make another appearance, even if it’s just a brief cameo in the new DCU. Perhaps he will appear as an older Flash from an alternate universe alongside Kid Flash. Alternatively, Gunn may choose to gradually introduce The Flash across various projects. Next up, Wally West is set to appear in the live-action Teen Titans movie, given his founding member status in the comics. The Flash can currently be streamed on Max.
