The realm of Star Wars has undergone significant changes since Daisy Ridley first portrayed Rey Skywalker in The Force Awakens, and it’s been six years since we last saw her in The Rise of Skywalker (2019). This time gap made Daisy pause when she was asked to reprise her role in a future Star Wars movie, set to hit theaters around 2026/2027, as she feared that she might struggle to slip back into her character.
In a comprehensive chat with “In The Envelope,” Ridley Scott shared that although she portrayed Rey across three significant “Star Wars” films, her participation in the “New World Order” movie presents a fresh and unique hurdle for her. She expressed that it’s a whole new ball game.
Initially, we produced the first three movies relatively close in terms of time. As a result, one thing that comes to mind is: Am I still able to portray Rey effectively? It’s been some time, and the Star Wars universe has progressed. This raises many questions about what transpired during this interval, not only for me but also for the character. In essence, these uncertainties present a challenge. Additionally, working with new actors and directors introduces different elements, which is always intriguing because it involves someone else’s perspective. After all, change can be enlightening as it offers fresh interpretations.
Working on this new film, given the different team involved, presents a significant challenge in ensuring continuity with the previous films, especially since it’s been quite some time. However, it’s an intriguing challenge, one that’s both daunting and exhilarating. Each project is unpredictable – you can have an exceptional script, a talented director, and all the right elements, but the final outcome remains uncertain. The potential is immense, yet we never truly know what the end result will be. We put in our best effort, then leave the rest to fate. It’s a constant reminder of the interpretative nature of our work and the importance of individual perspectives.
Daisy Ridley Addressed Fans’ Worries About Delays to Her ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Disney consistently plans ahead, and they’ve got a lineup of films set for release over the next three years. It’s not unusual for some of these movies to miss their original release dates. While some might interpret delayed releases as a negative sign for a project, Ridley Scott views it differently. Instead, he sees it as an inevitable part of the process to ensure a movie is the best it can be. Previously, he stated:
(Note: I’ve used “Ridley” instead of “she” to make the sentence more natural and easy to read)
Discussions frequently revolve around the impact of release dates on films and their production speed. Therefore, having the liberty to perfect this script and ensure it delivers our story effectively is a blessing, as no fan would want a hasty job. The anticipation will prove rewarding. I’m privy to what George [Nolfi] is crafting, and his writing abilities are exceptional. Consequently, I eagerly await reading the final draft, and yes, it’s all worth the patience.
One concern about Disney is their tendency to reveal projects too early. For instance, Lucasfilm unveiled numerous upcoming films from notable directors back in the day, slated for release in the ensuing years. However, only Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” has a confirmed cinema release date (May 22, 2026). Daisy Ridley’s movie is tentatively scheduled for December 2026, but it appears that this timeline may not be met.
Ultimately, viewers have grown disgruntled due to major film studios rushing post-production on their movies, resulting in visible blunders, subpar CGI, and an overwhelming tide of criticism against numerous box office flops. However, they’ve also expressed irritation with the frequent adjustments in release dates. Consequently, Ridley Scott proposes that fans should understand that films are completed when they are truly ready, and not dwell too much on release dates until official announcements are made.
