Dana-Fiona Armour Awarded Inaugural Sigg Art Prize

As a passionate art enthusiast with a keen interest in technology and its intersection with contemporary art, I am absolutely thrilled about the groundbreaking work of the Sigg Art Foundation. The 2024 Art Prize, with its innovative approach to integrating AI in the judging process, has truly pushed the boundaries of what we can expect from an art competition.

The Sigg Art Foundation has recently declared the victor of its initial Art Prize. Established in 2020 by art collector Pierre Sigg, this foundation aspires to reshape the parameters of modern art by combining AI and technology. Interestingly, this competition’s use of technology extends beyond the pieces themselves, as an AI judge is part of the jury that includes curators, writers, and collectors.

Selected from over 300 applicants hailing from 70 countries, the 2024 Art Prize goes to Paris-based German artist Dana-Fiona Armour for her interactive video installation, Alvinella Ophis. In light of this year’s Future Desert theme, the work bears life to a hybrid snake creature in a dry, dystopian landscape, incorporating infrared sensors to mirror the animal’s heat-sensitive capabilities. Armour’s work appears at the intersection of biotechnology, AI and contemporary art, often collaborating with scientists to bring a biological dimension to her installations and sculptures.

The artist is receiving €10,000 EUR (approximately $10,922 USD) as recognition for their work focusing on symbiosis and evolutionary resilience to foster environmental awareness and stimulate conversations about the Anthropocene era. Moreover, the artist, along with six other finalists, has been granted a four-week stay at the foundation’s facility in La Castellet, a quaint French village nestled in the south.

Right after the 2024 awards event, I’m thrilled to share that the Sigg Art Foundation has unveiled the theme for next year’s prize – it’s all about Artificial Crafts. If you’re as excited as I am and want to know more, head over to their website for details on the 2025 Art Prize.
