Daredevil: Born Again Shocks Fans by Killing Off Foggy – Here’s Why It Happened!

Warning: Major spoilers for the premiere of Daredevil’s reboot, titled Daredevil: Born Again! If you want to catch this fresh start for Daredevil, you can stream it using a Disney+ subscription.

In Charlie Cox’s own words, eliminating Foggy at the outset of “Daredevil: Born Again” was a daring decision. The demise of Elden Henson’s character caught fans off guard right from the start, and it left me questioning their reasoning behind such a significant and heart-wrenching choice in the first scenes of the series, set to air on the 2025 TV schedule. Fortunately, the showrunner and executive producers provided some insight into this matter.

Not only did they accomplish this, but they also unveiled how Foggy’s demise significantly evolved throughout the production process of the series.

Why The Team Decided To Kill Off Foggy In Daredevil: Born Again

In the interviews for TopMob’s “Daredevil: Born Again”, I couldn’t help but wonder why Foggy was the one who passed away. Given the significant comebacks of Karen and Foggy earlier, it seemed hard to accept that one of them would die so quickly. EP Brad Winderbaum explained that this wasn’t a decision they took lightly.

It’s something that we lost a lot of sleep over. Nobody wanted to do it.

Winderbaum further expressed that it was inevitable for this change to occur. The upcoming show titled “Daredevil: Born Again” signifies a fresh chapter in Matt Murdock’s narrative. He elaborated on the necessity of stripping down Matt’s character to its core for this series, and Foggy’s demise served as a powerful means to achieve that.

As a fellow appreciator, I found myself resonating deeply with Showrunner Dario Scardapane’s perspective. When I inquired about the reasons behind Foggy’s demise, he eloquently shared that “each loss paves the way for a fresh start.

In essence, what transpired was bound to occur. It’s intrinsic to his personality, it’s integral to the narrative. And in the realm of Daredevil, as followers, every setback paves the way for a fresh start. Each time he falls, he rises again, and we are compelled to bear witness to this.

Over the course of the initial two episodes, we witnessed the early stages of this fresh chapter in his life. Following Foggy’s demise, Karen relocates, Matt retires the suit, and he embarks on a new journey. As Winderbaum points out, Charlie Cox’s character’s determination to progress after a heart-wrenching loss is commendable.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the bond between Matt and Karen shatters brutally, akin to a sledgehammer blow. The law firm he once called his own closes its doors. Yet, a year later, I encounter Matt, seemingly striving to emulate Foggy’s vision for him – an endeavor that, quite honestly, is truly heartwarming and poignant.

Yet, he additionally pointed out that although Matt has established his new law firm and his bond with Heather is pleasant, he asserted that “such a world is illusory.” The speaker elaborated that the mounting tension will inevitably culminate, leading to an explosion.

In a thought-provoking twist, EP Sana Amanat pointed out that the impending death might be the most disastrous event for Matt. This dreaded scenario has materialized, and the narrative moving forward will revolve around how he navigates this predicament.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reflect on the classic series and the constant dread that haunts Daredevil, that is Matt Murdock. I believe there’s an abundance of tales yet untold when this fear becomes a living, breathing reality.

She’s correct. The death of Foggy compels Matt to confront his inner struggles and reevaluate his life path. In many aspects, he experiences a transformation reminiscent of a rebirth, which is why, despite the sorrow, that initial scene was fittingly powerful. Interestingly, this poignant start almost didn’t materialize…

Foggy’s Death Almost Wasn’t Shown On Screen

Though Foggy’s death in “Born Again” left me stunned, it would have enraged me if it transpired off-screen. If they had merely informed us he had passed away without allowing Elden Henson a final scene, I would have been furious. Fortunately, that was nearly the case, as Dario Scardapane shared with me:

What makes that particularly striking is that by the time I arrived at the scene, the events had already taken place and were merely hinted at through the narrative.

It’s possible you’re aware that during the process of creating “Daredevil: Born Again,” there were significant changes halfway through production. Originally, characters like Karen and Foggy weren’t intended to be part of the show. However, when Scardapane took over as showrunner, he felt it necessary to reinstate these characters. Moreover, a key plot point was the depiction of Matt’s best friend meeting his end.

I expressed, ‘It can’t just be left unseen. We need to experience this.’ Additionally, remember the pledge scribbled on a napkin at the end of Season 3? Well, we see it fulfilled in the beginning of this, and we deliberately shatter it with a hammer, which is intense and painful. Yet, it’s not done carelessly because that loss significantly impacts Matt’s storyline moving forward.
