As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the superhero genre from its humble beginnings to the colossal juggernaut it is today, I must say that the latest installment, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” was a delightful throwback to a bygone era. While I am saddened that we missed out on Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Ghost Rider in this film, I understand the creative decisions made during its development.

In the action-packed movie, Deadpool and Wolverine, numerous Marvel superheroes made appearances. However, even during the film’s development, Ryan Reynolds attempted to bring Nicolas Cage on board as Ghost Rider. The Deadpool sequel managed to resurrect long-forgotten heroes from the superhero genre, such as Channing Tatum as Gambit and Jennifer Garner as Elektra. For many viewers, Wesley Snipes’ return as Blade was a delightful surprise, but it’s worth noting that Deadpool & Wolverine nearly showcased another significant Marvel hero from before the MCU era.

Prior to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, there’s a lot of recorded history about attempts to cast Ben Affleck as Daredevil and Ghost Rider in earlier films. Intriguingly, there are official concept artworks from the 2000s depicting these Marvel heroes engaged in a climactic fight against an army of Deadpools. Regarding Ghost Rider, Reynolds revealed to Entertainment Weekly that they had discussions with Nicolas Cage, admitting: “We tried to secure him, but he wasn’t interested…. I would have adored him“. During the scriptwriting phase for this Deadpool movie, some ambitious concepts had to be abandoned, despite this being the biggest Deadpool film at that time. This included shelving significant Marvel guest appearances to prioritize the overall film, as Reynolds clarified:

As a devoted cinephile, I can share some insights into the creative process behind the latest Deadpool production. Initially, several concepts were drafted for key sequences within the film. However, as the project progressed, we found ourselves scrutinizing those ideas more closely. Our goal was to ensure that this blockbuster remained true to its roots while maintaining a sense of responsibility given its substantial budget.

It’s good to note that the movie didn’t miss out on introducing some beloved Marvel characters. Even though it would have been exciting to see Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider, there’s a chance he might show up later in the Multiverse Saga. As Avengers: Secret Wars is approaching, there’s still anticipation. Meanwhile, fans can catch Cage in another superhero realm, starring in the steampunk Spider-Man series titled “Spider Noir,” where he plays an alternate universe version of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Deadpool & Wolverine Already Had Enough on its Mind

Deadpool & Wolverine paid homage to an earlier era of Marvel films, yet it wasn’t endless in its screen time allocation. Incorporating brief appearances by lesser-known characters was more fitting for a Deadpool movie as opposed to featuring well-known heroes in secondary roles. For instance, having Chris Evans appear as Captain America instead of Johnny Storm (Human Torch) would have been a typical MCU cameo, whereas a surprise appearance of Johnny Storm could have felt like an exciting throwback for some viewers. Admittedly, Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider in Deadpool & Wolverine would have been thrilling, but given his immense popularity, he might have overshadowed the main characters.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now available to purchase digitally, and Disney+ users can stream the box office hit later this month on November 12. It’s unclear if another Deadpool MCU film is in the works, but expect the Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to appear again sooner rather than later. Whether that be a direct sequel or Secret Wars, Deadpool and crew should have plenty of opportunities in the future to grace the big screen again.
