As a follower and fan of Hugh Jackman‘s illustrious career, I can’t help but be in awe of the man behind the metal claws. The stories from the set of X-Men, particularly the one about him accidentally stabbing a stuntwoman during the filming of that iconic fight scene with Mystique, just adds another layer to my admiration for him.
In the latest Deadpool & Wolverine movie, Hugh Jackman, who plays the role of Wolverine, reminisces about the times when the iconic claws of his X-Men character weren’t entirely safe. He reveals an interesting fact that during one of the action sequences in the original X-Men film, when his character was fighting Mystique, a design issue led to some wounds appearing as real cuts.
According to Cinema Blend, Jackman recently appeared on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” to discuss an event that occurred during the making of the movie that launched the X-Men franchise in 2000. While examining a scene excerpt, Jackman commented on it.
In that battle, it was Mystique’s duplicate whom I injured instead. To begin with, we seemed to have been a bit reckless – they were metallic and razor-sharp. This required me to adapt as I now had an additional nine inches behind my hand while fighting. So, I had to learn to adjust. I would train, train, and make sure to follow through. I ended up injuring my own thighs, earning scars that remain visible on them even today.
In the specific moment, she was trying to grab something, and I intended to attack her arm. However, she failed to react quickly enough, and my actions led to me piercing her arm instead. The wound was roughly this deep — [shows depth] — into her arm, an incident I will always remember vividly, as it left me feeling quite pale.
It appears that the stuntwoman remained unfazed when Jackman went too far with the stunt, although she was bleeding. The scene carried on until someone called “cut!”, at which point her injuries were attended to. In truth, she seemed quite proud to be involved in a daring production that would eventually open doors for superhero films. Jackman, however, wasn’t thrilled about his error.
For the first time ever, I’ve just inflicted a stab wound on someone. As the blood spurted out, making a bubbling sound, she exclaimed, ‘I’ve been stabbed by Wolverine!’ Despite the flow of blue and red liquid down her arm due to her being a stuntwoman, she was remarkably tougher than I am. It seemed like a badge of honor for her.
Hugh Jackman’s Legacy as Wolverine is Unquestionable
It’s likely that Hugh Jackman wasn’t aware he was creating film history while working on X-Men, as just a year prior, the renowned actor was still filming lesser-known projects in Australia. The release of X-Men catapulted him to stardom and cemented his role as Wolverine/Logan, a character that has been reprised by few in the franchise. Known for movies like The Prestige, The Greatest Showman, Prisoners, Real Steel, among others, Jackman has portrayed Wolverine in a total of ten films.
