As a dedicated follower of the illustrious Khan family, I find myself captivated by Soha Ali Khan’s recent reminiscences about her royal heritage and the enchanting Pataudi Palace. Her tales weave a rich tapestry of history, tradition, and practicality that paints a vivid picture of the family’s unique way of life.
Soha Ali Khan contemplated on her regal lineage and the Pataudi Palace, primarily belonging to her brother, Saif Ali Khan. She pointed out that the Khan family does not commission full paintings for the palace but prefers whitewashing as it is more cost-effective. Additionally, she shared that Sharmila Tagore, her mother, manages the financial records of the estate.
In an interview with Cyrus Broacha on the Housing.com YouTube channel, she mentioned that her mother, a seasoned actor, regularly monitors the day-to-day costs associated with maintaining their historic residence. “My mother meticulously reviews her ledger; she is well-informed about both daily and monthly expenses. For instance, we prefer to whitewash rather than paint Pataudi because it’s more cost-effective. We haven’t acquired any new items in a while. The charm of the location lies primarily in its architecture, not in the things or objects.
Soha discussed the background of Pataudi Palace, explaining that she was born post the annulment of royal privileges and titles in 1970. She pointed out that her brother, Saif, was born a prince due to his arrival in the same year. Along with these titles, she noted, there were duties and financial obligations attached.
Soha proposed that her great-grandfather might have harbored some envy toward her great-grandfather due to his sporty competitiveness. Yet, while constructing the palace in an attempt to impress him, her great-grandfather encountered financial difficulties. Consequently, certain sections of the palace had carpets instead of marble flooring because they ran out of funds, exposing cement beneath.
Furthermore, she pointed out that since this ‘two-bedroom apartment’, which was once a part of the lease agreement with Neemrana Hotels for their use by her parents, is under her ownership, it falls under her maintenance responsibilities.
In addition, Soha drew attention to Saif’s earlier remarks that he had to repurchase the palace following its lease to a hotel chain. Currently, the family enjoys it as a getaway home and occasionally rents it for film productions. Among the latest films shot at this renowned spot were Animal and Saif’s series Tandav.
