As a fan who has been following James Gunn’s career for more than a decade, I must confess that I’m utterly astounded by the man’s relentless work ethic. It seems he’s borrowed a page from the DC Comics’ playbook and crafted his own Kryptonian-like abilities to extend his day beyond the mere 24 hours we mere mortals are accustomed to.
Over the past twelve years or so, James Gunn’s film and television output has primarily focused on superhero stories. From his stewardship of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a holiday special, to his early contributions to the DC Comics media world with The Suicide Squad, followed by Peacemaker Season 1 – all this work is quite impressive! Now, Gunn is co-running DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, which alone would be a demanding task. However, in addition to that, Gunn has also written and directed Superman, and he’s currently working on another DC project. It’s just as astounding as Frank Grillo‘s character, Rick Flag Sr., in the DC Universe finds it!
Following his initial casting to voice Flag Sr. in the forthcoming DC series “Creature Commandos,” set for release exclusively on Max in December, Grillo is set to bring the character to life in a live-action role within the “Superman” cast. Having completed principal photography for the upcoming DC film by the end of July, both Grillo and Gunn are now focusing their efforts on Season 2 of “Peacemaker.” In a recent Instagram post, this is what Grillo shared about his collaboration with Gunn:
Today marks the beginning of my work on the next few scenes for Peacemaker, penned by none other than James Gunn. He’s not only the writer but also the director for this project. After wrapping up directing and writing Superman, he traveled extensively for months until just last week. Now, without a break, he’ll be directing this series. In addition to that, he’s co-running DC Studios together with Peter Safran, which is now under Warner Bros. I can’t help but wonder, does he have an extra 48 or even 58 hours in his day?
It’s reasonable to think that James Gunn had to focus solely on running DC Studios due to its demanding nature, leaving little room for his creative work as a writer and director. However, since Peter Safran is handling the production aspects, it allows Gunn some breathing space to pursue personal projects like movies and TV shows. Remarkably, he’s even found time to work on Peacemaker Season 2 despite his busy schedule with DC Studios and post-production for Superman. If only Gunn could share the secret of having more than 24 hours in a day!
Frank Grillo’s video was accompanied by this caption he wrote, which fits James Gunn to a tee:
If you observe the routines of exceptionally successful individuals across various fields, you’ll find that they are not typical 9-to-5 workers. Instead, focus on doing what you’re passionate about, and you’ll find enjoyment in your work.
In contrast to Season 1 of Peacemaker, James Gunn is not overseeing all the episodes for Season 2; instead, he’s only directing three, including the first one. Greg Motolla took charge of the second and third episodes, while Peter Collett handled the fourth. As for the storyline of Season 2, it remains undisclosed at this point. However, when Frank Grillo was confirmed to be part of the cast, Gunn hinted that Rick Flag Sr. and John Cena’s character (Christopher Smith) have some unresolved issues. This stems from Smith killing Flag’s son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad. It appears that Daniel Kinnaman might return for Season 2 of Peacemaker, but it’s uncertain whether his role will be through flashbacks or hallucinations.
In addition to the main cast of “Peacemaker” Season 2, you’ll see Sol Rodríguez, Tim Meadows joining the team. The former will play Sasha Bordeaux, while the latter takes on the role of A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury. David Denman is also part of the ensemble, though his specific role hasn’t been revealed yet. Keep an eye on TopMob for updates on Season 2 and other upcoming DC Universe films and television series.
