Donald Glover Uses The Office And Superman To Explain Why He's Retiring From His Rap Career As Childish Gambino

As a huge fan of Donald Glover, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and sadness as I hear about his plans to retire the Childish Gambino persona. For many of us, his music has been an integral part of our lives for over a decade, providing us with catchy beats and thought-provoking lyrics that resonated deeply.

Donald Glover is widely recognized for his acting abilities on TV shows such as “Community,” “Atlanta,” and most recently “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” During the Emmy Awards nominations, these titles were frequently mentioned. Nonetheless, there are those who value his contributions to rap and hip-hop music under the alias Childish Gambino. Sadly for this fan base, the artist has announced that he intends to release one last album and tour before abandoning this persona.)

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the Emmy-winning artist has given us an updated and completed version of his earlier release, “3.15.20,” now titled “Atavista.” Later this year, he’s set to release his final album, “Bando Stone & The New World,” accompanied by a short film and a world tour. This grand finale promises an unforgettable experience, and when I asked him during the latest Hot Ones episode about retiring from music production, Donald Glover drew parallels to Superman and The Office, implying that it’s time for him to move on and embrace new challenges.

My colleague Fam Udeorji and I frequently discussed The Death of Superman. He had a strong affinity for this storyline, often bringing it up in our conversations. I was aware of Childish Gambino being a character, but I grew tired of it. The character reminded me of the boss from The Office, who once made things work, but now seems outdated and somewhat sad. Yet, there’s also a sense of continuity and progression, making it intriguing.

Many fans of Childish Gambino’s music might argue that the rapper’s persona is separate from Donald Glover, the comedian, and Donald Glover, the actor. (It’s also worth mentioning Donald Glover as a potential plumber, but we haven’t witnessed that side of him yet.) Given this distinction, it’s understandable why Glover and his team might look to other grand farewells in pop culture for inspiration as they plan the final chapter for Childish Gambino.

Despite the fact that over 30 years have passed since DC’s monumental crossover event, “The Death of Superman,” its influence continues to be strong. With numerous animated adaptations and countless reprints, this event serves as a significant reference point for Donald Glover. This comparison suggests that his upcoming album and world tour may present challenges as daunting as Doomsday itself, potentially involving a “death” scene. Given the success of “Atlanta” after four seasons, I have no doubt that he is capable of delivering such an experience.

The reason for Childish Gambino’s retirement isn’t solely about creating a grand farewell. In referencing “The Office,” Glover acknowledges that not everything popular a decade ago remains so. The television landscape has dramatically transformed since “The Office” was a successful NBC series, and the same holds true for rap music. Though Childish Gambino may never embody the careless negativity of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott, he understands that trends and preferences evolve with the passage of time.

Despite some things undergoing changes, many aspects remain constant. Fans of Donald Glover are eagerly anticipating his potential return as Troy Barnes for the “Community” film on Peacock. However, creator Dan Harmon has asked for space regarding this matter at present. It’s uncertain if Glover’s music commitments will genuinely conflict with him appearing in the movie or not.

During his ongoing tour, Donald Glover will attend the Emmy Awards in the midst of it all. The 76th Emmy Awards is where he has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama series, specifically for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” This show is also up for Outstanding Drama. Maya Erskine, his co-star, and several guest stars and crew members have also received nominations. Unfortunately, the renewed Season 2 of this project will introduce new characters, meaning that both John and Childish Gambino (Glover’s former roles) will be archived in the gallery of his past performances.
