As a devoted fan of Anya Taylor-Joy‘s captivating performances, I eagerly anticipate her portrayal of Alia Atreides in the upcoming “Dune Messiah” and “Dune: Part Three.” Her brief appearance in “Dune: Part Two” was merely a tantalizing taste of what’s to come.
In this flow of events, Anya Taylor-Joy, the actress from this year’s ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ and the upcoming AppleTV+ movie ‘The Gorge’, is also moving along. Recently, she made a guest appearance in ‘Dune: Part Two’ as Alia Atreides, the younger sister of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet. Although her role was brief, it carries significance as Alia plays a pivotal part in ‘Dune Messiah’, the subsequent book in the series and the foundation for the upcoming third film in Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy based on the series.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my insights on Villeneuve’s upcoming film. While the director has chosen to keep most details under wraps, I can confirm that the talented Anya Taylor-Joy is indeed set to play a role in this highly anticipated production. In an exclusive chat with Collider, she herself revealed her involvement in the project.
Absolutely! The movie production is underway, and I’m absolutely ecstatic to be involved. I’m a huge admirer of everyone associated with this project, and I simply can’t contain my excitement!
She confessed that she felt “nervous” when talking about Dune Messiah, due to the confidential nature of the undertaking.
Given the limited information available, it seems plausible that the actress might have a significant role in the project, considering her busy work schedule next year and some mathematical deductions. In her own words, she’ll be occupied till mid-2026. Part of this period will be spent filming for a new AppleTV+ series titled “Lucky,” which is expected to start production in spring 2025. Additionally, the movie “Dune” is slated to begin shooting in 2026, suggesting that a large part of her schedule could involve working on Dune’s set.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia Could Be a Big Departure From the ‘Dune’ Novels
It can be challenging to predict how Dune Messiah or Dune: Part Three will unfold, considering the modifications made by Villeneuve in the preceding films. One of the most significant differences is that Alia, who plays a crucial role in the story, is not present during the action and remains in Lady Jessica’s womb at the end of the second film. This departure from Frank Herbert’s original work stems from the fact that Alia is born and active by the conclusion of the first novel, having grown up rapidly due to her mother consuming the Water of Life, which grants Alia the abilities and knowledge equivalent to a Reverend Mother. In the source material, it was Alia who ultimately killed Baron Harkonnen, a task Paul performed in Part Two.
In the adaptation, Alia might showcase distinct looks and behaviors compared to her literary version. A notable variation is the age of the character, as she starts at approximately 16 in “Messiah”. While it’s possible for Taylor-Joy to portray Alia at 16, her character ages quickly, which could account for her mature appearance in “Part Two” and “Messiah”. Fans will have to be patient until “Dune Messiah” premieres in theaters to witness how Villeneuve and Taylor-Joy handle this intriguing character.
