EA Delays Apex Legends 2 to Focus On Major Updates and Meeting Expectations

Instead of rushing towards a full-blown sequel, they’re focusing more on enhancing the current version, aiming to meet and exceed the ever-growing expectations of the community and revitalize the gameplay experience that has seen a slight dip in engagement. This is quite a departure from EA’s past approach towards this franchise.

Initially, Andrew Wilson, the CEO of EA, harbored reservations about another sequel, expressing that follow-ups for live-service games often fail to match their initial success. In October, Wilson shared with VGC that the latest season of Apex Legends didn’t quite meet expectations. However, instead of launching a new version, EA has been dedicating its efforts to continually upgrading and enhancing the existing game through regular updates.

During a recent earnings conversation with VGC, Wilson disclosed a shift in approach, revealing that the development squad is currently working on what might be called “Apex 2.0”. This significant, substantial upgrade is anticipated to address existing problems within the game and introduce fresh elements to maintain player interest. As player engagement decreases, EA has been concentrating on updates that have a lasting effect and are designed for longevity.

Despite the fact that all the specifics of the update are still under wraps, Wilson has confirmed that major transformations won’t occur until after the upcoming Battlefield game, scheduled to launch before April 2026. Notably, Wilson also pointed out that Apex Legends boasts over 200 million players and remarkable success, but its expansion has slowed down as of late. In response to this, the team will be concentrating on “three key areas” moving forward.
