After successfully joining the Night Aspect expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign, it marks the start of the climax. In this quest, you’ll encounter Heolstor The Nightlord for a decisive final battle.
He’s the ultimate adversary in the game, and while the overall journey resembles typical expeditions with no major surprises, the battle against Heolstor could prove quite challenging if you’re not well-prepared on the first two days.
To make things easier for you, I’ve created a comprehensive guide explaining how you can successfully vanquish Heolstor and bring an end to his deceitful spectacle. I will be covering all the crucial aspects, such as the optimal team setup, significant attacks from the boss, and an efficient strategy to triumph over him.
I’ve put together a helpful guide that teaches you how to beat Heolstor and stop his trickery for good. You’ll learn about the best team composition, important moves from the boss, and strategies to win quickly.
Recommended Team Composition

Absolutely, based on my personal experience fighting the Nightfarers three distinct times with varying characters and teams, allow me to assure you that you are more than welcome to field any Nightfarers you prefer in this encounter. If you’re concerned about strategy, I recommend considering the following characters who might have an edge:
1. Character A, known for their exceptional agility and swift attacks, could be a great asset.
2. Character B, with their powerful magic abilities, might prove useful against the Nightfarers.
3. Lastly, Character C, renowned for their resilience and defense skills, could provide valuable support in combat.
- Wylder: A solid and balanced character that works great here due to his chainhook skill being able to let you close the gap against Heolstor. Plus, the Flaming Stake Ultimate Art is fantastic to stagger in case things start looking rough with an attack.
- Guardian: Unlike the rest of the Nightlords, Heolstor is an anthropomorphic-like boss fight until his second phase. If you’re looking to maintain a safe space for your squad, then Guardian is a must-pick for this fight due to him being able to tank damage with his Greatshield and having an excellent revival Ultimate Art in his back pocket.
- Ironeye: For the third slot, I advise bringing a ranged character, and there’s none better to fill that slot than my main man, Ironeye. Both his character skill and Ultimate Art can provide I-frames. With two other melee characters on the front line, you’ll be chipping away at his HP in peace—well, until his aggro decides to pummel you regardless.
Moreover, Raider is equally effective in this scenario due to his strong, offensive approach, and if you prefer a defensive role or secondary damage dealer, consider using Revenant as well.
Weaknesses And Preparation

As a devoted fan, I want to share some insights about Heolstor. To counter his primary weakness against the Holy affinity, it’s crucial to equip gear that makes targeting this aspect effortless. If you aim to deal maximum damage during the final battle with Nightlord, make sure to prepare an optimal loadout for the third day of the contest.
For optimal results during this battle against the boss, it’s advisable to be at least level 13 or higher.
It’s fortunate if you have experience fighting Gladius, have completed your homework on him, and brought equipment designed to exploit his weaknesses. That way, you will already be aware that the game is abundant with Holy-based weapons and Ashes of Wars which can be quite effective for this battle as well.

For those using the Ironeye, here is a strategy: If you manage to obtain the Erdtree Bow through weapon luck, it will provide most of what you need for this battle. Alternatively, you might come across some Holy Grease, which can serve as an equally effective means to exploit this enemy’s weakness.
Beyond that, feel free to add any additional items to enhance your ability to mitigate physical damage or boost your Poise. Incidentally, our battle was quite manageable as we managed to conquer it during our very first attempt together. Notably, we were also greatly strengthened due to the numerous bosses we defeated in the Rotted Woods Shifting Earth event.
How To Defeat Heolstor The Nightlord

In its preliminary stage, Heolstor is known as The Form of the Night, appearing more like a preserved cadaver than an active fighter. During this phase, it primarily serves as a build-up with minimal strategic maneuvers, focusing mainly on variations of sword attacks.
Let’s walk through together some of the crucial moves you should keep in mind when battling Heolstor. This will give you a good understanding of the fight.

Form | Moveset | Description |
---|---|---|
The Shape of Night | Sword Swing Combos | Just a standard and easily telegraphed sword swing, which the Shape of Night can do in multiple variations, from a single swing to a double and more. |
Charging Thrust | The Shape of Night will launch at you from a medium distance with the sword, which can be easily timed and dodged. | |
Frenzied State | Halfway through, the Shape of Night will let out a shriek and attack in a continuous manner for a brief period. | |
Heolstor The Nightlord | Thrust and Slam | Most likely, the attack he’ll initiate this transformation with. Heolstor will charge at you with his blade and then slam it into the ground to cause AOE ground damage. |
Arc Slashes | Heolstor will launch a couple of slash projectiles from his blade and follow it up with another melee slash at the end of it. | |
Ground Sweeps & Slashes | The most common attacks from Heolstor are when he slashes at you with his sword and swipes the ground in front of you. If you’ve fought similar bosses like Soul of Cinder or Gael, you should have no problem telegraphing these and dodging them. | |
Phantasmic Projectiles | Heolstor will enter a ghost state, shrouding your surroundings in darkness and summoning a barrage of slow-homing projectiles. They’re a bit tricky to dodge as you need to time your side evasions here precisely, but you’ll most likely get hit by a few of them if they’re mainly tracking you. But if you’re close to Heolstor here, he’s vulnerable to attacks in this state. | |
Reality Tear Slam | His second phase transitionary move, and one of my favorite attacks of any Soulsborne boss fight. Heolstor leaps into the sky and tears open a rift in the sky before ultimately slamming down and causing explosive trails. You can actually dodge this attack easily due to the visual cue of the explosion trail and its radius. He’ll also imbue his sword with flames, causing additional flaming trails when doing his regular attacks. | |
Frenzied State | Similar to his Shape of Night form, Heolstor will let out a shriek and charge at you with a relentless barrage of attacks. Most of the time, only a single teammate will be targeted with this move, but be careful while attacking him in this state since he can switch aggro and damage you, too. |
The Shape Of Night
The first encounter will kick off featuring The Shape of Night, a foe that doesn’t offer much resistance. You can confidently charge it with your group, but remember to exercise caution during the attacks I previously highlighted to avoid using precious healing potions unnecessarily in this phase of the boss battle.
In summary, if you’re playing a character with a ranged ability, you can feel secure about avoiding damage during this battle, unless it suddenly switches to a thrust attack. However, be cautious not to squander any resources here, whether they are items or FP, as every action will matter when facing Heolstor in his second form.
Heolstor The Nightlord

Regarding the battle against Heolstor in earlier Soulsborne games, this initial phase could either be incredibly challenging or surprisingly straightforward depending on your familiarity with these titles. For newcomers, I recommend experiencing this fight for the first time, as it offers a visually striking display, particularly during the rift tear attack.
In summary, you should know that Heolstor is similar to Soul of Cinder in terms of being a two-in-one boss encounter. Prepare yourself for a series of attacks using his sword, and be aware that the recovery period between his moves will be brief. Additionally, keep in mind that he can switch targets during his assaults, so stay alert even if he’s currently focusing on your teammates.

In a hurry, this final Nightlord can swiftly reach your position using rapid charges and teleports. Don’t underestimate him. Remember, it’s the ultimate Nightlord. If you keep attacking him with a Holy affinity, you might momentarily stun Heolstor during an attack or animation for a short while.
In the second stage, his attacks will create a fiery path and spikes on the ground after each hit, making them potentially dangerous for you to avoid. To stay safe, it’s essential to preserve your energy and concentrate on dodging his assaults effectively.
So, as long as your character is properly equipped and you use a weapon that has a Holy alignment, you shouldn’t find this battle overly challenging. If you’re seeking the authentic single-player adventure that FromSoftware games are known for, you might even try tackling it alone. This has become more feasible since the latest update enhanced the solo gameplay on expeditions.
Regarding your victory over Heolstor, you’ll earn the Primordial Nightlord’s Rune and a unique artifact known as the Night of the Lord Relic. This latter item offers intriguing capabilities when it comes to changing weapons. I look forward to witnessing its effects once you have the opportunity to use it yourself.
