The hit series Cobra Kai returns for its last set of episodes in season 6, its grand finale. Along with some unexpected characters making an appearance, including those reprising roles from the original show (a mix from previous seasons and one fresh addition), a lesser-known character steps into a crucial but limited role.
Elizabeth Berkley primarily gained fame for her lead roles in the television series ‘Saved By The Bell’ and the film ‘Showgirls’. Many viewers were taken aback to encounter her appearance on the show. Although her character only appears in a handful of episodes (two out of five), her presence sets off a chain reaction leading to a bigger event.
Elizabeth Berkley Plays Minnie in ‘Cobra Kai’
Daniel (Ralph Macchio) feels remorseful about enjoying a day out at a winery with Amanda (Courtney Henggeler), as they encounter a melancholic Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) at the residence of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). It turns out that Chozen is still distraught over Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita), who, to add insult to injury, has only expressed her affection for him in a platonic way.
Amanda remains resolute on visiting the winery since it’s crucial for them. Thus, she devises an ingenious plan: she invites her unattached friend, Winnie (Berkley), who shares similar interests. She believes that Winnie and Chozen would get along splendidly as they both appreciate nature and harmony, creating a potential connection between them.
Fans are pleasantly taken aback when Winnie appears and it turns out she’s from Berkley. At first, Chozen finds her irritating as she tells him the significance of his name and explains that she was late due to a Reiki session. She assumes he’ll be interested since it’s a Japanese spiritual practice, but he’s not swayed. He reminds her of an Okinawan saying which essentially means, “Reiki is nonsense.
The Significance of Berkley’s Character
In my experience, Winnie’s presence might seem limited, but her character plays a crucial role in wrapping up Chozen’s storyline for me. Although I must admit her discussions about healing, crystals, and auras sometimes come across as quite absurd, she aids me in finding clarity. Initially, I was not inclined towards participating in a tarot card reading with her, but eventually, she managed to persuade me, even if only slightly at first.
They bond over their shared enthusiasm for reality TV shows like Storage Wars, which eventually encourages Chozen to reach out to Winnie, initially as friends. She then performs a reading for him, pulling cards for his past, present, and future. Regarding the past, she reveals a profound sense of solitude. “He’s had honorable intentions,” she explains, “but his journey has been disrupted by life-threatening or self-inflicted perils”. This revelation resonates with Chozen, and he shows interest in hearing more.
In the following scene, Winnie clarifies that the card signifies a literal death, implying that someone close to him might pass away soon, possibly even multiple individuals. For viewers who have watched all five episodes, this prediction has proven accurate. The final card offers the most insight and is the Empress card. According to her interpretation, Winnie’s journey will conclude shortly, and a person possessing similar strength and determination will be there to welcome him. Chozen expresses doubt about what they are waiting for, and Winnie responds that it depends entirely on him. The possibilities could range from forming a partnership to even a romantic relationship. A flashback is shown of Chozen with Kim in Barcelona, reminding us of their past connection. “Yet we come from different spheres,” he laments. “It just can’t happen.
Winnie tells Chozen, ‘The one thing unattainable, Chozen, is skipping your voyage,'” replies Winnie. “Chozen expresses gratitude for the insight, and they clink glasses. By the story’s end, Chozen makes the bold decision to embark on his faith-filled journey. He ventures to Korea, where he encounters Kim amidst her instruction of new Cobra Kai pupils. She offers a warm smile, suggesting that Winnie was indeed correct – Chozen’s odyssey has concluded, and the person he sought was there all along. It seems they will join forces, training together and perhaps kindling a romantic connection.
