Ella Purnell Binge Watched True Crime Shows to Prep for Sweetpea Role

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for dark and gripping narratives, I must admit that Ella Purnell‘s latest role in Sweetpea has left me both captivated and disturbed. Her ability to transform from an innocuous character to a chilling serial killer is nothing short of remarkable.

In a different tone:

Purnell aimed to convincingly portray a character who transforms from an innocent pacifist into a serial killer, so she delved deep into some disturbing aspects during her preparation. In an interview with Variety, Purnell shared an incident where, on a flight, the woman sitting beside her noticed her laptop screen showing unsettling search results. She confided:

The collection mainly consisted of approximately 50 documentaries focusing on female serial killers. These cases differ significantly from those involving male serial killers.

In a playful manner, Purnell commented that the woman beside her swiftly shifted positions and seated herself elsewhere. The actress didn’t specify the particular shows she watched for study, but she eloquently expressed their impact as leading her to some “disturbing locations.” With true crime consistently growing in popularity as a genre, there is an almost endless amount of material for Purnell to have explored in preparation for the part.

Ella Purnell Already Wants Sweeptea Season 2

You can now catch Season 1 of Sweetpea on STARZ and Sky! This series has been receiving outstanding praise, boasting a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Over its six episodes, the protagonist Rhiannon delves further into her fascination with murder, as those around her gradually uncover that her new pastime isn’t quite innocent. Just days since its premiere, viewers are already clamoring for more content and demanding a second season!

During our chat, Purnell expressed hope that character Sweetpea might reappear in Season 2. The actress shared her thoughts, saying “I’d love for it to happen since I believe we haven’t finished exploring Rhiannon’s story.” But with the show wrapping up quite conclusively, the actress hinted that a clever script would be needed to convincingly continue the series. Put simply, Purnell suggested that a talented writer would be required to make a second season feasible.

Although the conclusion leaves me uncertain about what’s next, we’ll find a solution when the time comes.

Ella Purnell has several exciting projects coming up. In the movie “Sweetpea”, she gets to use her natural British accent, but fans might be more familiar with her American tone from Netflix’s popular video game adaptation, “Arcane”. The sequel is nearing release, and a sneak peek of the final season was shown at Netflix Geeked Week. Additionally, Purnell is preparing for the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s critically acclaimed “Fallout” series. The first season was a massive hit for Prime Video, and they quickly decided to renew it for another season.
