As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and sci-fi universes, I can’t help but feel a twinge of amusement at Elon Musk’s latest pop culture escapade. The man is a modern-day Tony Stark, albeit with more real-world innovation and less charm.
Elon Musk, head of Tesla, has been caught up in various instances related to pop culture, such as his disagreements with Disney and claims that the show Friends isn’t amusing. He frequently expresses his opinions about contemporary movies and TV shows on social media. However, a recent situation has arisen for Musk concerning a renowned science fiction film, Blade Runner 2049. The producers of this movie have filed a lawsuit against his company, accusing them of using the film’s images for promotional purposes without permission.
On Monday, Alcon Entertainment took legal action against Tesla in a federal court in California. The lawsuit alleges that Tesla used an artificial intelligence tool to convert images from the movie ‘Blade Runner 2049’ into promotional materials without permission for their robotaxi. These ads were used during the launch of the self-driving vehicle earlier this year, as reported by THR. Additionally, Alcon has expressed a desire to distance themselves from Elon Musk due to his controversial political and social views. The lawsuit further states:
A sensible company contemplating a partnership with Tesla should be mindful of Elon Musk’s influential, politicized, and unpredictable conduct, which at times borders on hate speech. Alcon decided that the Blade Runner 2049 brand did not wish to be associated with Musk.
In the lawsuit, it’s not just the car manufacturer that is mentioned, but Warner Bros. Discovery (the distributor of 2049) is also implicated, as they are said to have overseen the utilization of certain images. As part of this supposed collaboration, the unveiling of the robotaxi took place on a studio lot. During the event, an image was shown that depicted a man in a trench coat surveying the ruins of a city. Alcon Entertainment asserts that this shot originated from a scene where Ryan Gosling’s character K explores the remnants of Las Vegas.

According to Alcon, they claim that they weren’t informed about Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Tesla’s deal until the day of the reveal. Furthermore, it has been stated that when Elon Musk contacted Warner Brothers about a collaboration for robotaxis inspired by Blade Runner, an employee asked for clearance from Alcon, which was reportedly turned down due to the inclusion of AI-generated visuals. As a result, Alcon is taking legal action based on copyright infringement and false endorsement, with the intention of recovering unspecified damages.
In 2017, Denis Villeneuve’s movie “Blade Runner 2049” premiered in cinemas and received widespread acclaim. This movie, available for streaming with a Max subscription, didn’t spark a fresh era for the series, but it has since gained a devoted fanbase known as a cult following. Interestingly, Elon Musk, who recently expressed his appreciation for the franchise at a robotaxi event, is connected to it. The intellectual property (IP) for the franchise is being developed further, with “Blade Runner 2099” in production for Amazon Prime Video. This upcoming show could be another factor contributing to Alcon’s decision to distance themselves from Musk.
Currently, Elon Musk is dealing with a single legal issue concerning Hollywood. Additionally, he’s supporting Gina Carano in her lawsuit against Disney following her dismissal from The Mandalorian. The outcome of that court case, as well as Musk’s legal battle with Alcon Entertainment, remains uncertain at this time.
