Lily Collins is heading back to Paris and Rome this summer.
Production for the fifth season of the popular Netflix series, “Emily in Paris“, is scheduled to start in May. Initially, it will be filmed in Rome, and then later this summer, the filming will shift back to Paris.
All the recurring characters, including Emily Cooper played by Collins, Sylvie Grateau by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Mindy Chen by Ashley Park, Gabriel by Lucas Bravo, Julien by Samuel Arnold, Luc by Bruno Gouery, Antoine Lambert by William Abadie, Alfie by Lucien Laviscount, Genevieve by Thalia Besson, and Marcello by Eugenio Franceschini, will be back in their respective roles.
Notably absent from the list is Camille Razat, who portrayed Camille in the initial four seasons. Yet, this isn’t entirely unexpected, considering that her character (warning: spoilers!) departed from Paris at the conclusion of season four following a deception involving a false pregnancy with Gabriel.
To be perfectly honest, last season left me feeling a bit surprised about Gabriel’s comeback. You see, I’ve been voicing my discontent about the trajectory of my character, admitting I was “tired of the path my character is taking,” and even questioning whether I wanted to continue for another season. I shared with IndieWire last year that I’m eager to explore if Gabriel can return to his lively, witty, and spirited self again. After three seasons portraying a melancholic, sad, and lost character, I’m ready for some fun and laughter once more. It’s a comedy, after all, and it seems like everyone else is enjoying themselves while I’m stuck in this gloomy place.
In the fifth season, although specifics are yet to be disclosed, the fourth episode concluded with Agence Grateau, the show’s main organization, establishing a branch in Rome. This role is intended for Emily, which provides her a motivation to remain in Italy, close to her new love interest, Marcello, while creating uncertainty about her relationship with Gabriel.
After the season four finale, creator Darren Star hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that there would be more involvement of Rome in Emily’s storyline. “Agence Grateau expanded their business to Rome,” he said, explaining, “They can operate in multiple cities, and Emily could spend time in Rome. She could also spend time in Paris. She won’t be leaving Paris, though.” He further clarified, “We will explore more of Rome. But Emily did not change her social media handle to ‘Emily in Rome’.
The popular series “Emily in Paris” is set to resume filming in Rome starting May, which could be good news for Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri following his recent disagreement with French President Emmanuel Macron. Previously, Macron expressed concerns about the show potentially moving permanently from Paris, stating that he would “fight hard” against this, as the series is seen as highly beneficial in promoting France’s attractiveness. In response, Gualtieri reassured THR Roma by saying that Macron should “take it easy,” implying that Rome’s growing significance is evident through this move and that they are not worried about Netflix’s production decisions, as they understand the company’s strategy well.
Emily in Paris season five is set to premiere later this year.
