As a longtime admirer of Emily Ratajkowski‘s empowering journey and unapologetic approach to her own body, I wholeheartedly applaud her latest move. The “not demure” trend might have originated from a seemingly innocent TikTok post, but it has unfortunately been used to police women’s bodies and choices. Emily, however, flips the script brilliantly by using it as a platform to assert her autonomy and defy societal expectations.
Over the past few weeks, a popular trend on the Internet has spread rapidly, much like a wildfire, and this is known as the “unconventional” trend. The TikTok user who initiated this trend has experienced significant growth on the platform to the point where she will be able to finance her gender transition. Initially, a different trend was popular on that platform, but it has since influenced celebrity content on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. This is why I was quite intrigued when Emily Ratajkowski, who often wears bikinis and runs her own business, decided to go against the grain, even though the reason behind this action may not be immediately clear.
In a tank top, model Ratajkowski was strolling down the street when an unidentified man called out from behind, suggesting she wear a shirt. Ignoring his unsolicited advice, she walked on, eventually posting about the encounter on Instagram with a sharp retort. Her caption suggested she’s “not known for being demure or mindful,” challenging the upcoming summer trend. To further emphasize the season, she played some Charli XCX in the background, as it was “Brat” summer. (It’s worth noting that she reportedly had a lively ‘Shaboozey’ summer.)

Stars like Kim Kardashian and Jenna Ortega, who recently appeared on the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice press tour, are embracing the “demure” style that started on TikTok by content creator Jools Lebron. In a viral post, she mentioned being “very demure, very mindful.” Since then, we’ve entered the age of demure, and not only celebrities but also TV shows and other social media accounts have adopted this trend. Even Bridgerton’s Penelope and Colin are now part of it. Soak up this fashion wave while you can!
Emily Ratajkowski, however, leverages this trend as a means to demonstrate that she’s a woman who isn’t afraid to express herself and wear what she chooses, despite the numerous individuals who seem eager to voice their opinions or claim ownership over her body. Notably, she has spoken publicly about her experiences on the set of “Blurred Lines,” following allegations of inappropriate behavior. She has stated that she has no regrets about the shoot and has shared her perspective on the situation.
All women are objectified and sexualized to some degree, I figured, so I might as well do it on my own terms. I thought that there was power in my ability to choose to do so.
In response to a stranger intruding upon her personal space and time with a comment about her body, she showed a remarkably similar spirit, making a public retort that was both unconventional and highly effective. This approach not only offers a fresh perspective on the current trend but also delivers a powerful rebuke.
