As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast who has survived countless nights of terror in the virtual world, I can confidently say that Universal Orlando Resort’s upcoming attraction, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, is about to bring my nightmares to life in the most terrifying way possible. Having grown up on classics like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolf Man, I can only imagine the adrenaline rush of encountering these monsters in a fully immersive, state-of-the-art experience.
Prepare yourself for an unprecedented level of fear as history’s most dreadful monsters leap from the pages of legend to reality in a heart-pounding new ride, set to debut next year at Universal’s latest theme park, Epic Universe. Recently, fans were granted a sneak peek at the eerily lifelike robots that will keep guests on edge all year round as they explore the chilling Dark Universe at Universal Orlando Resort, starting in 2025.
In the upcoming attraction, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, fans of Universal Parks will encounter monstrous beings that are totally unprecedented. These terrifying creatures will bring them face-to-face with characters like Frankenstein’s monster and Dracula, as they navigate the haunting catacombs of Frankenstein Manor while attempting to escape.
14 highly realistic animated characters are set to bring chaos to a spooky mansion in what Universal Orlando Resort claims will be their “scariest attraction ever.
In a sneak peek video, Production Designer Frances Franceschi hinted with excitement that the animate characters in this production are moving at speeds never before achieved by our constructed figures, and there are numerous of them. The clip and initial images from the teaser video instantly reveal that these advanced animatronics surpass anything even the most dedicated Halloween Horror Nights enthusiasts have previously witnessed.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I’m excited about the new monsters that have been created with the “next gen” of fans in mind. These beasts look incredibly lifelike!
“We want to make sure that we kept everything that was familiar, kept everything that was the essence of these monsters, but we wanted to take them to another level,” he said. “These monsters are scary.”
Epic Universe’s Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
In the new theme park, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is planned to inhabit Dark Universe, which is one of the five fully-immersive realms to be featured.
Bold visitors will venture far within the labyrinthine depths of Frankenstein Manor, encountering Doctor Victoria Frankenstein, a descendant (great-great-granddaughter) of the notorious Henry Frankenstein, along the way.
In a similar fashion as her misled forerunner, Victoria continues to test the limits of scientific exploration through bizarre experiments, convinced that she’s found the key to mastering some of history’s most fearsome creatures.
As Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, I warmly greet those brave souls who dare step into our ancestral manor’s sacred chambers. It is I who carry on the legacy begun by my esteemed forebear. Now, united, we shall complete the grand work that my great-grandfather so humbly initiated.
However, the monsters soon gain control of the situation, as the riders venture deeper into the shadows, where they will face off against Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s creature, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and others.
According to Senior Creative Director Peter Carsillo during the initial reveal, these creations are deeply emotional, they’re impressive, and they’re extremely intense. From a technical aspect, they surpass even the most imaginative predictions about what an animated character is capable of.
This aligns perfectly with the hints dropped by the creators of Epic Universe during New York Comic-Con 2024, who referred to the entire theme park as a continuation of these multiple monster movie series, each of which is currently available for streaming on Peacock.
The monsters of Epic Universe’s Dark Universe
To excite eager fans, Universal Orlando Resort unveiled a sneak peek at some of the horrifying creatures they’ll encounter on their journey ahead.
Frankenstein
In Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s laboratory before the ride begins, Frankenstein – standing over nine feet tall and weighing more than 800 pounds – will be the first monster you’ll meet. This artificial creature, with his skin a vibrant green, is easily recognizable due to the white stitches running across it as he strides menacingly through the lab, his eyes conveying an unsettling glare.
In Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic novel “Frankenstein,” the character of Frankenstein was initially presented. Later on, he became famous through various horror movies such as “Frankenstein,” “The Bride of Frankenstein,” and “The Son of Frankenstein.
Dracula
In the 1979 movie titled “Dracula”, the character Dracula is known to be the “most fearsome monster” within Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s collection. The legendary vampire probably gained this title due to his involvement in planning the monsters’ coordinated assault. Throughout the ride, he will frequently show off his sharp white teeth and guide the terror.
The Wolf Man
In a blurring of human and beast, the character known as the Wolf Man, initially seen in the 1941 horror movie “The Wolf Man”, will be ready to pounce as visitors attempt to flee the manor. Those who venture near him risk feeling the bite of his menacing claws and fearsome teeth.
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Hidden beneath the water’s depth, lies The Creature From the Black Lagoon. This colossal green beast, introduced in the 1950s film “The Creature of the Black Lagoon,” will ambush visitors when the timing is perfect as they explore the manor.
When Will Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment Open?
The cutting edge attraction will be part of Epic Universe, Universal’s latest theme park slated to open May 22, 2025.
Beyond their journey on the ride, park visitors will additionally encounter and snap pictures with some iconic monsters dwelling in the Dark Universe area of the amusement park. These include the Bride of Frankenstein, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant Ygor, The Invisible Man (somehow), and a monster slayer.
With excitement building for the theme park’s grand opening next year, fans have the chance to refresh their memories of iconic Universal monsters by watching the films where they became legends, all streamable now on Peacock.
