Following several weeks of clashes between Thunderbolts and Sinners, and an impressive debut by Final Destination, Hollywood delivered an intriguing head-to-head this weekend. Disney unveiled the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch against the premiere of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning. Industry experts were optimistic that both films would appeal to distinct audiences, while also drawing in a smaller group eager for double billings, much like the many moviegoers who enjoyed Barbenheimer.

Although we’re unsure of the exact number of individuals who completed the StitchPossible over the weekend, it’s clear that a significant number of people attended both options. Each film surpassed $60M in its opening weekend earnings, with one significantly outperforming the other. For an initial glimpse at the estimated box office top 10 figures, take a look at the numbers circulating this morning. Further analysis will be provided in subsequent paragraphs.

So, Is This A Surprise?

Over the weekend, there seemed to be much anticipation pitted between “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible 8”. However, it’s been evident for some time now who would come out on top. The excitement surrounding the Disney remake has been consistently high for months, and early ticket sales indicated a massive opening weekend was in store.

Following its earnings of approximately $15 million during Thursday previews, there were discussions about the possibility of reaching a $200 million extended holiday box office weekend. However, such numbers are highly improbable. The actual target for Disney was probably to earn over $150 million throughout the weekend, and they will effortlessly exceed this threshold on Monday, with predictions pointing towards earnings in the range of around $175 million.

The movie “Mission: Impossible” is expected to earn more than $75 million during the extended weekend, although it won’t come close to the earnings of “Lilo & Stitch“. However, this is still a promising start. The film’s high production costs are due to the numerous practical stunts performed by Tom Cruise. Despite these costs, the movie should enjoy continued success at the box office and has potential for additional revenue streams following its initial release. Each new installment in the franchise tends to increase viewership on all previous movies, creating a beneficial cycle.

How Should We Feel About Thunderbolts*?

There’s been much discussion lately about Marvel’s current standing as a franchise. The studio has admitted to reducing its movie production pace and focusing more on quality rather than quantity. It seems that fans are no longer consuming everything Marvel produces; instead, they’re opting for movies based on the titles that particularly appeal to them.

In the past several years, I’ve seen quite a few high-profile sequels like “Black Panther 2”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, and the pairing of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” do exceptionally well at the box office. However, it’s also been challenging for numerous titles to surpass the $200 million mark domestically. “Captain America 4” barely managed it, and more recent releases such as “The Marvels” and “Eternals” fell significantly short. Yet, I have high hopes for “Thunderbolts”, given its potential success even among characters that many fans are not familiar with. Positive critic and audience reviews should also boost everything on Marvel’s upcoming release schedule, although some titles have been postponed.

Next week, we have scheduled arrivals for A24’s highly anticipated horror movie titled “Bring Her Back“, along with the latest installment of “The Karate Kid“. These films are expected to perform well at the box office, but it will be intriguing to observe if either can challenge the success of “Mission” or “Lilo” in their respective second weekends. Eric will return next week with an update on how they fare.
