As a dedicated viewer of television series who’s seen more than a few seasons come and go, I can confidently say that Escape at Dannemora is a rare gem that stands out from the crowd. Having followed its original release years ago, I’m overjoyed to see it finding new life on Netflix.
Previously aired and now revitalized, the older series “Escape at Dannemora” – originally aired on Showtime in 2018 about an infamous 21st-century prison break – has been gaining attention once more, finding new life as one of Netflix’s top shows. I couldn’t be happier to witness this beloved show from a few years ago receive renewed appreciation.
Since “Escape at Dannemora” has resurfaced in the public eye, as evidenced by its position on Netflix’s Top 10 list, I believe now is an excellent opportunity to discuss this nearly flawless crime drama and why you should revisit or even start watching it, even if it’s been over five years since your last view. Let’s delve into the reasons behind my recommendation…
This Is Honestly One Of The Best Prison Shows I’ve Ever Seen
Throughout the years, numerous remarkable prison-themed shows have emerged, such as “Oz”, “Orange is the New Black”, and “Prison Break”. Among these, “Escape at Dannemora” holds its ground in discussions about the greatest of all time. Despite Joyce “Tillie” Mitchell, the former guard who was convicted for aiding convicts in their prison escape, expressing some criticism towards Ben Stiller’s adaptation of the series, it’s challenging to view this as anything other than an absorbing, emotional, and highly engaging drama.
In the series “Escape at Dannemora,” the prison is not just a backdrop but plays a pivotal role as if it’s a character itself, contributing significantly to the show’s intrigue. The world within the cold, confining walls and bars teems with multi-layered and nuanced characters who exist beyond simple dichotomies, adding depth to the narrative and enhancing its appeal.
Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro, and Paul Dano Put On Some Of The Best Performances Of Their Careers
Despite not receiving recognition at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, and Benicio del Toro delivered outstanding performances as Joyce Mitchell, David Sweat, and Richard Matt, respectively, offering some of their finest acting work to date.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Dano blew my mind with his intense performance as a cunning inmate yearning for freedom in “The Batman.” He nailed the intricacies of The Riddler, showing he’s got what it takes. Del Toro was equally impressive in his debut TV role, playing Dano’s on-screen partner and fellow convict, a character who would go to any length to break free from prison confinement. But Arquette stole the show with her portrayal of a guard navigating the thin line between victim and accomplice. It was a breathtaking performance, especially considering her impressive acting resume before that role.
The Dynamic Between The Three Leads Is Both Fascinating And Terrifying
The seven-episode series titled “Escape at Dannemora” skillfully blends a multi-layered, heartrending, and gripping story about three individuals whose lives unexpectedly interconnect, sometimes for the good, but more often with disastrous consequences. Each of the leading actors delivers outstanding performances, but it’s the intense and intriguing love triangle among their characters that amplifies their portrayals even further.
In any given scene, be it the intricate plotting of their daring getaway or a passionate sequence reminiscent of steamy Netflix movies, the trio’s chemistry elevates an already good show to an exceptional television series. I found myself forgetting that Arquette, Dano, and del Toro were acting, instead seeing three individuals grappling with a dire predicament they had unwittingly created throughout the series, regardless of their role in its origin.
Even The Supporting Actors Put On Incredibly Riveting Performances
However, the three main actors in Escape at Dannemora aren’t the only impressive performers. The show’s supporting cast is equally captivating in their diverse roles. Particularly noteworthy are David Morse and Eric Lange, portraying Gene Palmer and Lyle Mitchell from Clinton Correctional Facility.
In the seven-episode series, both Lyle and Gene become deeply entangled in the escape incident that leads to a larger scandal, attracting state authorities to investigate. Their intricate connections, such as Lyle’s complex marriage with Joyce, and Gene getting drawn into the plot, enrich the narrative by providing additional depth to the show and making the three central characters’ stories even more captivating and convoluted.
Ben Stiller’s Direction Creates A Masterclass In Tension And Drama
Ben Stiller has since become renowned for producing one of television’s finest shows, Apple TV+’s original series “Severance”, a gripping tale filled with drama, mystery, and characters struggling to comprehend or break free from their current predicaments. However, years prior to his work in the Lumon Industries universe, Stiller directed the movie “Escape at Dannemora”.
I’m not saying we wouldn’t be eagerly awaiting Severance Season 2 right now if the comedian and actor didn’t first make this Showtime true crime series, but the show did allow Stiller to fine-tune his directing skills on the small screen after years of making hilarious comedies like Reality Bites, Tropic Thunder and Zoolander. And just like he would do with his next TV series, Stiller created a masterclass in tension and drama that leaves you on the edge of your seat for seven episodes.
I’m So Glad This Show Is Finding A New Audience Years After Its Original Run
fundamentally, I’m delighted that Escape at Dannemora is reaching a fresh audience following all these years. Regrettably, it’s not possible to create a second season because the original episodes tied up all the real-life events, but it’s wonderful to see a show that meant so much to me years ago gain renewed popularity or at least more viewers, years after I concluded my personal journey with characters who were both complex and intriguing.
It’s possible that at some stage in the future, other series from the 2010s might receive attention and become available on Netflix.
