As a movie enthusiast with a keen interest in sitcoms, particularly those that delve into the human experience, I am beyond excited for Comedy Central’s revival of “Everybody Still Hates Chris.” Having grown up in the 90s and being a fan of the original series, I can hardly contain my anticipation for this animated reimagining.
Comedy Central has unveiled a sneak peek and premiere date for their upcoming adult-oriented animated show titled “Everybody Still Hates Chris.” This new series is a fresh take on the live-action sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris,” following the continuation of comedian Chris Rock’s semi-autobiographical account of his childhood. Drawing inspiration from his life as a skinny nerd in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, within a working-class family during the late 1980s, “Everybody Still Hates Chris” is set to air on Comedy Central starting September 25th. The first glimpse of the series was shared by THR, which you can see below!
The image features the entire Rock family dining out, a rare occasion for this family as Terry Crew’s character, Julius, was famously thrifty. This is the first glimpse at the long-awaited series, which first began development way back in 2021 and is now all set to air next month on Comedy Central.
How Will It Compare To The Original Series?
The original, real-life series “Everybody Hates Chris” earned critical praise and is often hailed as one of the finest Black sitcoms ever produced. It aired between 2005 and 2009, featuring Tyler James Williams from “Abbott Elementary” as a young Chris Rock. The show was highly appreciated for its accurate portrayal of what it’s like to grow up and discover oneself in a middle-class African American family. Each episode offers a glimpse into the challenging, tumultuous teenage years of Chris, delving deeper to explore his family and community as well. The series fearlessly tackles contemporary socio-economic issues while using humor to discuss race and class in America.
The adult cartoon show is set to carry on its growing-up storyline, yet with a fresh appearance and feel. Moving from a live-action comedy to an animated series allows the writers more flexibility in terms of visuals and imagination, making it exciting to witness how the animators portray Chris’ narrations, inner musings, and fantasies. The animation might even introduce wilder situations than previously seen.
An alternative approach might be to discuss the passing of time and the characters growing older. Fans of the initial show enjoyed witnessing Chris evolve from a child into a young adult, with the series finale showing his character maturing not despite, but because of his roots and past experiences. The upcoming animated series aims to delve deeper and focus specifically on Chris’ early life. Sanjay Shah, the showrunner, has expressed excitement about the project, praising its potential.
Initially, I was hoping for this job because it offered Chris Rock stand-up show tickets. However, what we ultimately produced is something we can be truly proud of – a creation that stays faithful to the original series we hold dear.
In the new season, Rock takes on dual roles as executive producer and narrator for each episode. Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold rejoin the cast as Chris’ parents, Julius and Rochelle, while Tim Joshnson Jr. voices young Chris. The series “Everybody Still Hates Chris” is produced by Eye Animation Productions, under CBS Studios. Titmouse, famous for “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and Netflix’s “Big Mouth”, handles the animation duties for this show.
