Everything You Need To Remember About Apple TV+s Silo Before Season 2

As a seasoned viewer of post-apocalyptic dramas, I can’t help but feel both intrigued and slightly overwhelmed by the revelations about Silo Season 2. The desolate landscape that Forme finds herself in mirrors my own emotional state as I try to wrap my head around all the new details.

Among the top-notch programming available on Apple TV+, the critically acclaimed show “Silo” stands out as one of the most outstanding series in recent memory. This captivating sci-fi dystopian drama is adapted from the Hugh Howey novel trilogy, “Wool,” “Shift,” and “Dust.” The first season debuted in May 2023, and now, after a lengthy wait of over a year-and-a-half, the second season is almost upon us. With such a significant gap between seasons, it’s beneficial to revisit the events of the first season and consider how those developments might influence the storyline in season two.

The World of Silo

In a future marked by devastation, it’s said that Earth became inhospitable due to an unknown catastrophe, leaving survivors no choice but to reside in an underground refuge known as a silo. This towering, cylindrical edifice spans 144 levels, and its inhabitants can only traverse it on foot using a network of spiraling staircases. For some, this silo has been their entire world, as they have never seen the Earth before its transformation.

In this “new” society, there persist the same social hierarchies as seen today. The laborers are positioned at the base, while the privileged, such as executives, physicians, and law enforcement, occupy the highest echelons. The system functions like a well-oiled machine, with the populace being convinced that venturing beyond its doors would lead to an immediate demise.

This evidence comes from a large viewing area displaying an alleged view of Earth outside the silo, provided by a camera mounted on its exterior. If anyone were to ever suggest leaving or even hint at it, there’s no going back. They are dressed in protective gear and led out through a long tunnel. Everyone inside witnesses them taking a few steps, cleaning the camera (a process called “cleaning”), and falling just a few more steps away from the structure.

What Happens in Season 1?

In the extraordinary debut season of Silo, the narrative unfolds as Allison Becker (played by Rashida Jones), a young IT department employee, becomes increasingly convinced that not everything is as it appears. Initially skeptical, her husband Holston Becker (David Oyelowo) maintains his duties as sheriff and adheres to the silo’s principles. However, when Allison delves too deeply into the mystery and takes drastic steps to substantiate her claims, she requests to venture outside, only for it to seem that she has perished in the process.

As Holston encounters a woman named Juliette Nichols, an engineer who works on the silo’s generators, he begins to ponder if Allison might have been onto something. Suspecting that her friend George’s death was not an accident, Juliette develops a rapport with Holston, thinking he could aid her. With Juliette, Holston starts to unearth hidden truths, and he eventually decides to make the challenging choice to step outside and reunite with his wife. Before departing, however, he pens a statement endorsing Juliette as his successor. He trusts that she’ll unravel the mystery ahead.

In her new position, Juliette covertly strives to maintain harmony within the confines of the silo while uncovering the truth behind its hidden operations. She tracks clues that seem to point towards a forbidden hard drive, allegedly holding all the secrets she seeks. However, obtaining it and safely accessing its content turns out to be a tougher task than she expected. Since artifacts from the past, such as hard drives and computers, are prohibited in the silo, her mission becomes increasingly complex.

How Does Silo Season 1 End?

As Juliette delves deeper into the past of the silo, she encounters a group known as the Flamekeepers who strive to preserve fading memories. It’s revealed that they were once targeted by her father, who was instructed to stop them from bearing children, so as to maintain control. This grim revelation leaves Juliette with an understanding that things are far more dire than she had ever anticipated.

In the end, she uncovers the fact that hidden cameras are concealed within the wall mirrors in each room, meaning she’s been under constant observation. She manages to locate a hard drive but can’t open it. Just as she’s about to crack its code, Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), the IT director, and Robert Sims (Common), head of security, seize her.

Bernard admits to orchestrating numerous deaths and controlling the silo’s operations, disguising himself as a mere bystander. He deceitfully instructs another individual to make a dangerous exit, which she successfully executes. Later, she locates a hidden access point and discovers a secret message from George encouraging her to seek out a door beneath the silo. She shares the remaining footage, revealing a beautiful, verdant environment with birds soaring overhead, with everyone in the silo. She asserts that this is the actual exterior landscape, contradicting the barren wasteland Bernard had led them to believe lay beyond the doors. However, she is apprehended once more, and her impending doom looms ever closer.

Following her donning a suit and traversing the tunnel, Juliette steps out to find that the barren terrain before her is exactly what she had anticipated. Sadly, there’s no verdant landscape as she had envisioned. However, fortunately for her, Martha Walker (Harriet Walter), a trusted electrical engineer, mentor, and maternal figure, had ensured high-quality heating tape on Juliette’s suit, thereby preserving her life. To her astonishment and dismay, Juliette discovers numerous more craters, each housing its own silo.

What We Know About Silo Season 2

From the sneak peek of Silo Season 2, it’s clear that Rebecca is alive but situated outside the silo. In the footage she presented, it appears there may be upheaval within the silo. Showrunner Graham Yost revealed to RadioTimes that the new season starts with a “rebellion backfiring” and Rebecca in grave danger. It’s confirmed that Rebecca resorts to entering another silo due to her dwindling air supply. Although the heat tape is functioning, it won’t last forever. Fortunately, with an engineering background, she can improvise or make use of whatever resources are available to ensure her survival.

Yost mentions that there’s an unexpected turn at the finale of the initial episode, which is certain to make viewers eager to watch the following one. Unfortunately, unlike Season 1 where viewers were treated to the first two episodes simultaneously, only the premiere will be released on November 15, 2024. Each subsequent episode will follow weekly, with a total of ten episodes airing through January 17, 2025.

If the series continues along the lines of Howey’s books, this season could delve into the backstory of the silos since fans now know there’s more than one. The novels offer various viewpoints on the genesis of the silos and their function, and it seems plausible that the show will investigate these aspects as well. Strangely, in another clip, Bernard is shown telling everyone they’ll “safely exit the silo!”, which raises more questions than it answers. The reason for their departure and their destination are left unanswered.

For season two, new faces will join the cast, among them Steve Zahn portraying Solo. Additionally, several characters from season one are set to return, such as Shane McRae as Knox, Iain Glen as Dr. Pete Nichols, Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings, Avi Nash as Lukas Kyle, along with Robbins, Walter, and Common. The series Silo will conclude after its fourth season, but rest assured that the narrative continues beyond this season as well.
