Ewan McGregor Thinks His Obi-Wan Kenobi Still Has a 'Few Stories To Tell'

As a long-time fan and follower of the Star Wars saga, I can confidently say that Ewan McGregor’s desire for more Obi-Wan Kenobi stories resonates deeply with me. Having grown up with Obi-Wan as a beloved character, it’s heartening to see McGregor express his enthusiasm for continuing the story. The potential for new adventures in the gap between the Disney+ series and the original trilogy is tantalizing, and I can only imagine what other tales could be woven around Obi-Wan’s life on Tatooine.

Ewan McGregor believes there are still many untold tales about Obi-Wan Kenobi, a character he first portrayed in 1999’s “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.” In this movie, he stepped into the role previously played by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy. McGregor revisited the character in 2002’s “Attack of the Clones” and again in 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.” In 2022, 17 years after his last portrayal, he once more took on the role for the Disney+ series titled “Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor is now set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he recently spoke with Variety about his career. In this interview, he expressed his desire to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi after the Disney+ series, despite some believing that Obi-Wan’s story has already been told since the character was in hiding from the Empire before the original Star Wars events. However, McGregor believes there are still many stories the franchise could tell, bridging the gap between the spinoff and Obi-Wan saving Luke Skywalker from the Tusken Raiders. In his words:

I truly look forward to having another opportunity to continue. From the point where the series concluded and when Alec Guinness appears alongside Luke Skywalker, it seems there are more tales yet to be shared.

Will There be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

During the run of the Disney+ series, “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” its inception was intended as a movie, but changed due to the poor box office performance of “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” This shift in strategy for the “Star Wars” franchise led to the development of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” as a series instead. Originally conceived as a trilogy of films, there are additional tales the creators could explore following the events of the show’s first season. The “Star Wars” comics have explored Obi-Wan’s life on Tatooine, and the final episode’s encounter between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force ghost sets up potential new adventures. A possible continuation of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” featuring Ewan McGregor reprising his role along with Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn would be an enticing prospect for fans.

Given the current trend, it appears that a second season for Obi-Wan Kenobi might be more of a wish than a reality. It seems Disney and Lucasfilm are scaling back on Star Wars television series. They’ve already called off The Acolyte, and it looks like The Mandalorian Season 4 has been replaced by a large-scale feature film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. The production schedule also appears sparse: after Skeleton Crew at the end of December 2024, the only Disney+ Star Wars series scheduled for 2025 seems to be Andor Season 2. Ahsoka Season 2 is not expected until 2026, which is also when The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to premiere.

It seems that Lucasfilm is now changing direction, moving away from Star Wars series on Disney+ and instead bringing the franchise back to theaters. Alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu, they also have another Star Wars film in the works which will combine many of the live-action Disney+ series into a crossover movie. Director James Mangold is currently working on a film centered around the first Jedi, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing a new movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey. There’s also the possibility of Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Star Wars feature film, potentially tying together the story from movies to Disney+ series and back to movies.
