This week, news emerged that Aamir Khan and his team have planned a traditional release strategy for Sitaare Zameen Par. Initially, they intended to show the film on 1000-1500 screens in India, with a possibility of expanding it based on audience response over the weekend. However, things took an unexpected twist as Sitaare Zameen Par is now preparing for a nationwide release instead.
Based on information from sources involved in the development, both individual cinema owners and smaller multiplex operators have expressed interest in screening Sitaare Zameen Par at their venues starting from June 20th. These exhibitors are optimistic that the star power of Aamir Khan, combined with strong content, will attract larger crowds over the weekend, despite some genre-specific challenges in the post-pandemic era. The enthusiasm for Sitaare Zameen Par among exhibitors is also due to Aamir Khan’s decision to avoid OTT releases. As a result, the film is expected to be screened on approximately 3000 to 3500 screens nationwide, with the team choosing a wide release strategy to maximize audience reach.
It appears that Aamir is making a great effort to present Sitaare Zameen Par in the most optimal way for cinema viewers by collaborating with his distributor partner after consulting with exhibitors, who initially had reservations about a platform release in today’s world. The exhibitors have also promised their full support for this endeavor.
With “Sitaare Zameen Par,” Aamir Khan is making a bold decision by refusing to sell the online streaming rights to any platform, despite receiving numerous offers. Instead, he wants the movie to be theater-exclusive. Interestingly, “Sitaare Zameen Par” was originally produced with Sony Pictures, but when the studio hesitated about the ‘exclusively for big screen’ concept, Aamir Khan decided to buy back the film from them at a cost of approximately Rs 30 crore, aiming to execute an unprecedented move by not granting digital rights to any partner.
