First Steps. Instead of relying solely on digital effects when it came to bringing the film’s antagonist, Galactus (also known as the Destroyer of Worlds), to life, they opted for a more traditional method by integrating practical effects into actor Ralph Ineson’s performance. This is particularly intriguing given that Galactus possesses the ability to hold entire cosmic entities in his hand.
Galactus, once a mere mortal who transformed into an immense celestial being that challenges the laws of space and time, can be described as a colossal entity. His enormous size (and power) is sustained by consuming entire planets. In comic books, he’s often depicted in armor of purple and blue, while the 2007 film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, portrayed Galactus more like a formless cosmic cloud rather than the classic version. However, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see actor Ineson transforming into a sentient mist. Contrary to this change in the film, Galactus dons his comic book armor and they are working diligently to maintain consistency with the scale of the storyline.
Per Shakman, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:
Instead of merely relying on motion-capture, I opted for a more personal approach by having an actor embody Galactus. Consequently, we’ve designed a full costume for him and carried out extensive photography tests to determine aspects such as maintaining the correct scale and capturing Mount Rushmore effectively.
