FBI: International Co-Creator Breaks Silence On CBS Cancellation, And I Doubt It’ll Comfort Fans Bothered By Final Episode’s Cliffhanger

2025 has seen some significant TV show cancellations by CBS, including the termination of “S.W.A.T.” for a spinoff led by Hondo, “The Equalizer,” two established spinoffs of “FBI,” and more. Notably, Derek Haas, co-creator of “FBI: International,” has remained tight-lipped about the series’ future, as he’s been focusing on producing the first season of Jensen Ackles’ new drama thriller, “Countdown.

Currently, Haas acknowledges the disappointing events that denied “FBI: International” viewers a satisfying conclusion for the character Wes. He then shared his feelings upon learning about the show’s cancellation with TVLine.

I was genuinely disappointed upon learning about the show’s cancellation, as I had grown quite fond of Jesse Soffer portraying Wes and felt that his character added a lot of energy and depth to the cast during season 4.

Additionally, Haas praised fellow Season 4 recruit Jay Hayden of Station 19 fame, stating that he and Soffer were an exceptional duo as Special Agents Booth and Miller. Although he had jointly created the second FBI spinoff with Dick Wolf and acted as showrunner for its initial two seasons while also co-managing other Wolf-based series, Haas relinquished his roles on both shows in 2023 to focus on developing new ventures like Countdown.

Regrettably, Derek Haas couldn’t provide any detailed explanations as to why the show was terminated or where the narrative might have progressed after the two-part finale that transported the Fly Team to Japan. However, he expressed faith that CBS executives had sound reasons for pulling the plug on it.

I have a strong affection for Amy Reisenbach, Eric Kim (who is in charge of current programming at CBS), and everyone I consider friends at Wolf Entertainment. Given my trust in their judgment, it’s likely that factors other than the show’s quality led to their decisions.

As a movie enthusiast, I ponder if there could ever be a choice to axe a TV series without its quality being a factor. It might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes financial constraints overshadow even the most captivating storylines. The allure of superior narrative can quickly fade when the roar of monetary troubles becomes too loud.

What CBS’ Boss Said About The FBI Cancellations

Amy Reisenbach expressed her views on the cancelations of shows such as FBI: International, FBI: Most Wanted, and The Equalizer during CBS’s fall TV schedule announcement in May. She suggested that these decisions were primarily due to financial concerns.

In simpler terms, we needed to watch our spending carefully, and from a financial standpoint, those agreements and productions didn’t add up favorably for us.

After that point, I haven’t come across any further clarifications that provide additional insight into why certain aspects of the show may have become too costly financially. Typically, production companies start to watch their spending more closely around the seventh season due to contractual raises becoming significant. However, _FBI: International_ was only entering its fifth season with two new actors joining just a year before.

For the time being, it seems reasonable for fans to primarily hold out hope that the forthcoming CIA spinoff could possibly include appearances by some veterans from International, or alternatively, may present fresh character developments when it premieres.
