Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco, Alan Cumming to Star in ‘Borges and Me’

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual adventures and real-life narratives, I am thrilled by the prospect of “Borges and Me”. Having traversed countless digital landscapes and engaged with diverse characters, I find myself drawn to the tangible journey that Fionn Whitehead and Luis Gnecco are about to embark on.

Fionn Whitehead and Luis Gnecco will headline in the film adaptation titled “Borges and Me“, based on Jay Parini’s memoir detailing his adventure through the Scottish Highlands with the esteemed Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges during the 1970s. Parini is most recognized for writing the historical novel “The Last Station“, which was transformed into a feature film nominated for an Oscar by Michael Hoffman in 2009.

Actor Whitehead, who recently portrayed Pip opposite Olivia Colman’s Miss Havisham in the FX/BBC adaptation of Great Expectations, is set to take on the role of Parini, with Gnecco, a well-known Chilean-Italian actor recognized for his work in Neruda, No, and A Fantastic Woman, being cast as Borges. Alongside them are Alan Cumming, Peter Mullan, and Harriet Sansom Harris. The cast is complete.

In the book “Borges and Me“, a 23-year-old timid student named Parini, harboring aspirations of being a writer, unexpectedly finds himself driving the legendary, blind author Borges, aged 70, around Scotland. Initially, Parini struggles to understand the eccentric, uncontainable Borges. As their adventure unfolds, reminiscent of a Borgesian tale, it takes a bizarre twist that underscores their contrasts. However, in the style of a classic road trip story, they eventually discover shared experiences and connections.

Filmmaker Marc Turtletaub, known for movies like “Puzzle” and “Jules,” is helming a screenplay penned by Oren Moverman (famous for “The Messenger” and “Love & Mercy”). The filming has commenced in Scotland, with Big Beach handling the production and financing.

The production of “Borges and Me” is a joint effort among the U.K., Belgium, and The Netherlands. Alex Polunin of Ossian International in the U.K., Michael B. Clark, Marc Turtletaub, and Tim Foley from Big Beach, Leontine Petit and Erik Glijnis from Lemming Film, and Dries Phlypo from A Private View are among the producers. Stephen Burt will serve as an executive producer.
