Florence Pugh doesn’t understand why actresses are also expected to be models.
In her interview for the latest cover feature on Who What Wear, the actress nominated for an Oscar shared insights into the evolving landscape of Hollywood. She discussed the growing trend of casting calls requiring a substantial social media presence, as well as the increased pressure on actors to take on roles outside of acting.
Pugh expressed frustration, stating, ‘It’s not the same thing.’ He had recently discussed this with a friend. … It’s astonishing that red carpet events are even considered standard for someone who isn’t… That’s not their profession. … They excel in being comfortable on camera, and they know how to quickly reveal their inner emotions. That’s their skillset. Their abilities extend beyond this, but that’s what they’re compensated for, and that’s why we recognize them. It’s expected of them to be like a runway model, and they’re compared to runway models.
The Thunderbolts star shares insights gained from personal experiences, transitioning from feelings of intense self-consciousness about her attire during photo shoots to ultimately understanding what flatters her body shape best and confidently expressing her preferences on set.
With repeated attempts, your skills improve, and your confidence grows,” she clarified. “As you examine the images and assess the work, you find yourself thinking, ‘This looks fantastic! Now I will learn to articulate why a particular outfit may not be suitable.’
When inquired about whether modeling resembles assuming a character, Pugh explained that it’s actually quite different. She described it as extremely revealing because it involves showcasing one’s own beauty, which she likened to everyone’s personal struggle or deepest fears.
As a seasoned gamer with over a decade under my belt, having been cast in blockbusters like Dune: Part Two, We Live in Time, Oppenheimer, and Don’t Worry Darling, I’ve learned the importance of seizing each opportunity while staying focused on my goal.
She expressed, “If I’m let down by how something turned out or its appearance, or if someone’s criticizing the dress I wore, or if I didn’t fit the dress quite right, or if they had any other negative comments to make about me, I need to respond with, ‘Darling, this is not what you’re here for.’ This is not your responsibility.
