Following Yasuda’s Grey’s Anatomy Exit, Would Midori Francis Return To The Show? Here’s Her Honest Thoughts

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of binge-watching experience under my belt, I must say that Grey’s Anatomy has always been a rollercoaster ride for me, much like playing through the most intense levels of a video game.

Spoiler alert! This story contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy’s November 21 episode “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Episodes can be streamed with a Hulu subscription if you need to catch up.

Grey’s Anatomy wrapped up its run on the 2024 TV schedule by saying goodbye to two beloved surgeons. Last week we bid farewell to Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt, as he chose to follow his passion for pediatrics to a job in Texas. This week Mika Yasuda also took control of her own fate by choosing to leave the hospital, but the circumstances were much less celebratory. With Mika surviving the car crash cliffhanger earlier this season, Grey’s Anatomy effectively left the door open for Midori Francis to return someday, and the actress shared her honest thoughts about whether that’s a possibility.

The song “Drop It Like It’s Hot” takes place six weeks after Mika’s sister Chloe passed away in a hospital. Struggling to cope, Mika returns to work for the first time since the tragic incident. Despite trying to focus on someone new (Jules Millin), Mika can’t shake off her grief and eventually decides to resign from her job when she confesses this to Miranda Bailey. Bailey, portrayed by Chandra Wilson, responded with understanding, suggesting that going through this experience would make Mika a more compassionate doctor once she was ready to help people again. When asked about Mika’s future by Deadline, Midori Francis expressed her belief in this character development.

I believe Mika needs time to heal deeply, and I anticipate she’ll return home to work on that. Given her deep dedication to helping others, I’m confident and optimistic that she will discover a means to transform this grief into further compassion for others.

It’s heartening to see that the writers of Grey’s Anatomy decided not to write off Mika (I had expected them to do so, given it’s been some time since any major characters were killed off). This leaves open the possibility for her return in the future. However, actress Midori Francis isn’t certain about this trajectory for her character – even though she personally hopes for a comeback, she has doubts about Mika’s specific journey ahead. She stated:

As for going back to Grey’s Anatomy, it would bring me immense joy. This show and its cast have significantly impacted my acting journey, and I would be overjoyed at the opportunity to return. However, I’m not sure if Mika would feel the same, as she might find it emotionally challenging.

In the given episode, Mika expressed sentiments reminiscent of Bailey’s when their mentor hinted that her feelings could change over a few weeks. Mika explained that she was someone who fully commits or completely withdraws, and she firmly believed she wouldn’t find healing if she continued working at that hospital.

It’s disappointing for fans who were waiting to see more of Mika and Jules (Adelaide Kane) together, as their brief romance ended tragically after Mika left Jules heartbroken once again. Frankly, I found it frustrating when they became a couple on Grey’s Anatomy, given how short-lived and painful the relationship turned out to be. Yet, I must admit that their brief moments together were quite captivating, so perhaps my dissatisfaction isn’t entirely warranted.

The popular series “Drop It Like It’s Hot” concluded with a major suspense, leaving us in the dark about whether Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) or Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) was injured during the convenience store robbery. The fate of their babies remains uncertain and will only be revealed when “Grey’s Anatomy” returns as part of the 2025 TV schedule, airing at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, March 6 on ABC.

For the moment, “Grey’s Anatomy” is an excellent series to catch up on Netflix, and given that you likely don’t have enough time to rewatch all 20 seasons from scratch, we offer some recommendations for where to begin your “Grey’s” rewatch, based on your preferred era of the medical drama.
