As a fan of contemporary art and a regular visitor to Fondation Beyeler over the past decade, I can confidently say that ‘What Time is Heaven?’ is a game-changer for the museum scene. The immersive experience this exhibition offers is unlike anything I’ve seen before!
The Fondation Beyeler is preparing for an unprecedented makeover with its new exhibition, “What Time is Heaven?” This engaging show breaks the mold of traditional museum exhibits as both the building and its gardens transform into a work of art that continues to develop. For the first time in its 25-year tenure, renowned artists such as Michael Armitage, Anne Boyer, Federico Campagna, and Ian Cheng will contribute to this living artwork, creating an ever-evolving contemporary art experience.
Some noteworthy features are: Philippe Parreno’s “Membrane 2” (2024), an imposing, tech-forward monument in the garden, engages its environment with intricate technological responses. Fujiko Nakaya’s fog installations, captivating audiences since the ’60s, generate a tranquil, ethereal ambiance, transforming the museum into a spectral landscape. Within, Rachel Rose’s “What Time Is Heaven” (2024), showcasing vacant Foundation rooms in photographs, and Pierre Huyghe’s sculptures with helmet-like structures intermittently emerge, contributing to a dynamic, ever-evolving backdrop.
Adrián Villar Rojas’s works “The End of Imagination VI” and “The End of Imagination VII” (both 2024) change ordinary items into otherworldly constructs akin to the unsettling sets from early Cronenberg films. In contrast, Arthur Jafa’s film “LOML” (2022), a poignant and understated homage to the late cultural critic Greg Tate, and Cyprien Gaillard’s “Retinal Rivalry” (2024) with its striking 3D visuals, are noteworthy for their groundbreaking application of film and technology.
In partnership with the LUMA Foundation and curated by a group consisting of Sam Keller, Mouna Mekouar, Isabela Mora, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno, and Tino Sehgal, “What Time is Heaven?” presents an ever-changing exhibition instead of a stationary display, available for viewing until August 11, 2024.
