As a seasoned horror aficionado who has braved countless haunted houses and sleepovers at Camp Crystal Lake, I can confidently say that Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is a must-watch for any fan of the genre. Forty years after its initial release, this iconic film still stands out as a classic in slasher cinema history.
Fans of Friday the 13th, brace yourselves as Crispin Glover brings back his quirky and amusing dance routines to the Silver Screen at Camp Crystal Lake. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this classic horror film, director Joesph Zito’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) will be screening in select theaters this coming September for a limited time.
In this upcoming film titled “The Final Chapter“, actor Ted White portrays Jason Voorhees while Corey Feldman takes on the role of Tommy Jarvis, marking their initial confrontation. This classic horror movie is making a comeback to theaters, thanks to Fangoria magazine and Paramount Scares’ collaboration. Here’s the announcement, as per Cinemark:
In collaboration with PARAMOUNT SCARES & FANGORIA, they’ve prepared an entertaining pre-show for you! This special event is hosted by David Dastmalchian (known from Late Night with the Devil) and delves into the past of the Friday the 13th series, focusing on the character Jason Voorhees. Additionally, it offers insights from various cast and crew members who were instrumental in creating this thrilling sequel.
In the climactic chapter of this classic horror series, Tommy Jarvis, a young character, takes center stage to challenge the traditional “Final Girl” archetype. He’s tasked with standing up against the fearsome and hulking Jason Voorhees, who dons a hockey mask, in a thrilling showdown at the end of the film. If Tommy fails to outwit and defeat him, there will be no survivors left at Camp Blood! The announcement for the 40th-anniversary screenings highlights this exciting twist.
“Grab some popcorn, folks! The chilling saga of Friday the 13th continues in ‘The Final Chapter’. After what seemed like a fatal blow, evil is back and breathing down our necks again. The once presumed dead Jason Voorhees is wreaking havoc at Crystal Lake, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Little Tommy Jarvis steps up as a possible adversary for this relentless slasher. Could it be that the indomitable Jason has finally met his match?”
The Final Chapter Was Just the Beginning
As a die-hard fan of the ‘Friday the 13th’ series, I was thrilled when ‘Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter’ hit the silver screen. However, unbelievably, eight more chapters unfolded after that, with ‘The Final Chapter’ initially marked as the swan song for the franchise. The resilient Tommy Jarvis graced our screens in a total of three ‘Friday the 13th’ movies, a testament to the success of ‘The Final Chapter’. Corey Feldman made a brief return at the start of the subsequent film, ‘Friday the 13th: Part V – A New Beginning’, to establish the plotline, but was soon replaced by John Shepherd for most of the 1985 movie. The mantle was then passed on to Thom Mathews in the 1986 release, ‘Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI’.
Critics such as renowned duo Siskel & Ebert panned The Final Chapter. Additionally, the movie didn’t garner much favor with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving an audience score of just 51%. However, this fourth film in the Friday the 13th series was a massive success at the box office, causing discomfort for Roger Ebert, a late film critic from the Chicago Sun-Times. In his initial 1984 review (as stated by The Official Roger Ebert), he expressed his dissatisfaction with the movie.
A highly controversial and distasteful film, which earned more box office revenue during its debut weekend than any other movie in 1984 up to that point. This unfortunate fact speaks volumes about popular taste.
1984 saw the debut of “The Final Chapter” on April 13th, starring the late actor and stuntman Ted White as Jason. This film set a new record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in the entire franchise at that time, earning $11.2 million over its first three days and eventually totaling close to $33 million (according to Box Office Mojo). For nearly 20 years, “The Final Chapter” held the title for the Friday series’ highest-grossing opening weekend until “Freddy vs. Jason” (2003) surpassed it with a record-breaking $36.4 million.
For three specific dates, screenings of “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” marking its 40th anniversary will be held. The movie will reappear on the Silver Screen on September 10, with special showings taking place on Friday, the 13th of the same month. Extra performances are planned for September 15 too. To secure tickets ahead of time, fans can check their preferred cinemas’ websites such as Cinemark, as they are now available for purchase.
