FX, Disney Pull in Record Emmy Haul as HBO Stumbles

As a long-time television enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall of various networks over the decades, I can confidently say that this year’s Emmys were nothing short of a Disney spectacle! With their impressive 60 awards, it seems like the Mouse House has truly taken over Hollywood. It’s almost as if they’re trying to build their own version of Hype Parkway in EPCOT!

Prior to the Emmys starting on Sunday, it was already clear that one media conglomerate would be taking home the most awards. With 14 Creative Arts wins for “Shogun”, Disney was well ahead and seemed nearly impossible to catch in terms of total awards earned.

The only question was how much the Mouse House would run up the score. The answer: Quite a bit.

FX-produced shows, spearheaded by the Shogun and The Bear (each securing four awards at the Emmys on Sunday), broke records by earning a total of 18 wins in the drama category and 11 in comedy – making them the most successful dramas and comedies of the year. Across all platforms, FX-produced programs claimed a staggering 36 Emmy Awards, placing them at the top. Even more impressive, if we consider FX alone, it would have catapulted Disney to the lead among media conglomerates. However, FX wasn’t done there; it also collected an additional 24 awards, pushing their grand total to a record-breaking 60.

During Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts awards, Netflix accumulated 24 Emmy awards, making it the second-place winner, surpassing their 22 wins at the 75th Emmys. HBO/Max earned 14 Emmys, marking a decrease compared to over 25 years ago when HBO won 14 awards in 1998, prior to the streaming era. Apple and NBCUniversal were also among the winners, both securing more than ten awards.

Disney’s shows like “Shogun” and “The Bear” were undoubtedly the main attractions, but other programs on Disney+, ABC, and Hulu also shone brightly with numerous award wins:

On Sunday, HBO and Max had some shining moments. For instance, Max’s series “Hacks” shone brightly, winning awards for best comedy series, writing for a comedy, and lead actress Jean Smart. Additionally, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” earned two Emmys, while “Alex Edelman: Just for Us” was recognized with the award for best writing for a variety special. This latter win was particularly touching as Alex Edelman dedicated his speech to Adam Brace, the show’s director who passed away in 2023.

It’s plausible that the less-than-stellar year for HBO/Max is primarily due to scheduling issues and a lack of fresh content following the strikes, rather than anything else. Shows like “Succession” concluded their awards journey last year at the Emmys, while “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus” didn’t air any new episodes during this particular Emmy season. These shows were responsible for a combined total of 13 awards in 2023 – only one award fewer than HBO/Max earned this year. It’s expected that these shows, as well as “House of the Dragon” (which won an Emmy for its first season), will return in time to be eligible for the 2025 Emmys.

The following information indicates that in the present, the 2024 Emmy Awards were dominated by Disney and more specifically, FX. A detailed analysis of awards won by platform, parent company, and specific programs can be found below.
