Gambit’s Secret Super Powers: 5 Things You Never Knew The Marvel Mutant Could Do

Gambit's Secret Super Powers: 5 Things You Never Knew The Marvel Mutant Could Do

As a longtime fan of the X-Men comics, I can confidently say that Gambit has always been one of my favorite characters due to his unique abilities and Cajun charm. But it wasn’t until I stumbled upon some lesser-known tales about him that I truly appreciated the depth of his powers.

2024: “Recall it” as the year when Gambit, who charmed fans with one of the most memorable lines from “X-Men ’97,” eventually made his live-action debut in “Deadpool & Wolverine” thanks to Channing Tatum’s portrayal. Despite the buzz surrounding these two appearances for the character, casual fans have only caught a glimpse of Gambit’s mutant abilities. There could be much more to this character than just playing cards with explosive effects. Although his warning to “start dealing” might instill fear in some, there are other skills hidden within Remy LaBeau that remain to be seen. If Gambit ever reappears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (as hinted by a deleted scene), fans may get to witness some of these additional talents

Gambit effortlessly transforms his unique weapon to flash purples and explode, yet the X-Man cloaked in a trench coat has shown extraordinary abilities since his debut in Marvel Comics back in 1990. When pushed to his limits, Remy LeBeau has manipulated time and space and displayed an exceptional charisma that’s captivated more than just Rogue. Given these talents, let’s take a closer look at the type of power this poker-playing mutant possesses and why he remains one of the most underrated characters in the Marvel Universe

Gambit has super-rizz. Seriously

There’s an enchanting quality about Gambit that leaves even the strongest beings spellbound; this is due to his hypnotic allure, which is a part of his mutant skills. For the first time, this power was shown during Gambit’s initial appearance in “Uncanny X-Men” #266. With just his voice, he can persuade others to accept and agree with whatever ideas he proposes to them. This talent proved incredibly useful for the Cajun before he joined the X-Men, during his days as a member of the Thieves Guild

Similar to various hidden groups scattered across the Marvel Universe, the Thieves Guild serves as a global network that provided an ideal environment for Gambit and his skills to thrive following his adoption by one of its members, Jean-Luc LeBeau. However, it’s important to note that Remy’s powers of persuasion aren’t universally effective. Superpowered individuals who are familiar with Gambit’s tactics can sometimes see past his charms, rendering them ineffective. Despite this, even the incredibly powerful Shadow King – a villain as ancient as mankind’s first nightmare – found it challenging to outwit Gambit’s strategies of manipulation

Gambit’s iconic eyes aren’t just for show

Much like other mutants, Gambit faced numerous challenges during his childhood due to his unique appearance. Rejected by his family at birth because of his fiery red eyes and nicknamed “white devil” by the guild that raised him, Gambit’s distinctive peepers have additional abilities that cause trouble for many. These eyes grant Remy extraordinary vision, enabling him to precisely cut objects with his playing cards from up to 50 feet away. In fact, he once managed to place a card within the tiny gaps of Magneto’s famous helmet

Although extremely useful, there was an instance where Gambit’s power backfired spectacularly, causing serious damage to his eyesight when one of his own cards unexpectedly detonated near him. In this difficult period, he resorted to using his preferred weapons as if they were tarot cards, granting him a glimpse into the future. However, following this temporary loss of sight, the mutant Sage intervened and restored his vision with a special boost, allowing Gambit to rejoin the action swiftly. In the grand scheme of things, such a grave injury is unusual for this renowned card-savvy superhero, especially considering that besides enhanced vision, Gambit also boasts some healing powers similar to another X-Men legend

Gambit keeps his guard up thanks to an impressive energy field

Just like Gambit can weave his way into people’s minds effortlessly, he’s equally skilled at shielding himself from intruders. His unique ability to generate an energy field that disrupts telepathic signals makes it a difficult task, bordering on agony, even for the strongest telepaths, to penetrate the thoughts of the sly thief Remy

Beyond his standard defense, Gambit’s talents don’t end there. He possesses a remarkable regenerative ability, similar yet not as swift as Wolverine’s. Given the right circumstances, this power allows him to recover from near-fatal situations. In an extraordinary incident, Remy was shot in the head, but due to Sage enhancing his healing abilities, he managed to eject the bullet, energize it with another of his powers, and subsequently use it to eliminate his attacker in a move that was more like a reverse card game trick than a traditional poker play

Furthermore, Gambit possesses a method of disruption via his unique energy boost, which can confuse opponents by disrupting their senses severely enough to render them unconscious. However, it’s important to note that his powerful red eyes, mental and physical defenses, and charm to sway enemies are not the pinnacle of Gambit’s abilities. At some point, this Louisiana mutant transformed into an entity of pure, energy manipulating, reality-altering power

Gambit has been able manipulate and travel through time

Occasionally, when heroes find themselves in the battle of battles, mere playing cards won’t cut it to secure victory. In a crucial instance within Gambit’s timeline, he was compelled to engage an alternate version of himself originating from another dimension. Nicknamed the New Sun, this doppelganger had refined and enhanced his powers to a degree that left our beloved Cajun at a disadvantage. At the zenith of his power, the alternate Remy transformed into a being of raw energy, no longer needing to touch an object to charge it for explosion; merely gazing at it could cause it to explode. Fortunately, Gambit managed to boost his abilities and become a formidable adversary by mirroring the capabilities of the New Sun

Following incredible enhancements that allowed him to control kinetic energy with precision, Gambit discovered ways to manipulate space and time. Pushing past his limits even more, he gained the ability to fly, emit energy blasts, and alter reality according to his desires. Despite using up these powers to vanquish the New Sun, Gambit demonstrated the capacity to reach Omega-level mutant status like Jean Grey or Magneto. However, he chose not to do so and submitted himself partially to Mr. Sinister’s lobotomy to keep his power level in check. In the end, this divine collection of powers didn’t last for Gambit, perhaps for our own good and that of reality itself

His cards can be a cage, depending which side Gambit is playing for

In a way that seems eerily similar to a “Goosebumps” tale, it’s not just about throwing cards like grenades for Gambit; he has a more sinister side. After his first appearance as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen of Death in X-Men #184, his powers underwent some drastic changes. Apocalypse endowed him with a Death Charge, causing any object he touched to become imbued with dark energy instead of kinetic. This transformation resulted in those unfortunate enough to encounter Gambit’s signature playing cards experiencing something far from a mere stun – they were either dismembered or trapped inside the very cards themselves

In his metamorphosis into the fearsome Horsemen, Gambit gained even greater mastery over the playing cards he was already adept at hurling. This new ability allowed him to steer the trajectory of the cards post-throw, effectively turning the revered hero into a chilling echo of his past self. This transformation seems imminent in his next cartoon outing, as suggested by the teaser following the credits in “X-Men ’97” Season 1. Here’s to hoping that those longtime allies will have good luck when they encounter him once again as one of Apocalypse’s horsemen
