In the follow-up to the 2018 action-heist movie Den of Thieves, Gerard Butler (known for Plane and the Has Fallen series) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (familiar from Straight Out of Compton and Godzilla: King of the Monsters) reprise their roles. This time around, character Big Nick (played by Butler) is on a European chase, hot on the heels of Donnie (portrayed by Jackson), who finds himself tangled in the dangerous and volatile web of diamond thieves and the notorious Panther mafia as they plan an audacious heist targeting the world’s largest diamond exchange.
Den of Thieves Was a Big Hit with Action Movie Fans
In the film “Den of Thieves,” directed by Christian Gudegast, we follow Big Nick O’Brien (Butler), a tough and boozy leader of the Regulators, an elite team within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. On the other side, Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber) is the freshly paroled head of the Outlaws, a group of ex-military men who leverage their combat skills to outmaneuver law enforcement. As events unfold, O’Brien and Merrimen, along with their respective crews, find themselves on a head-on collision path as the criminals concoct an intricate plan for a seemingly impossible heist targeting the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.
Despite receiving a lukewarm reception from critics, reflected by a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film Den of Thieves proved to be a crowd-pleaser and a success among action movie enthusiasts, raking in a global box office total of $80.5 million against an initial investment of $30 million. The grizzled performance by Butler, coupled with pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat action scenes, has left fans eager for another visit to the perilous realm of Den of Thieves.
The sequel to “Den of Thieves,” titled “Panthera,” is slated for a theater release in the U.S. on January 10, 2025, thanks to Lionsgate Pictures.
