As a longtime connoisseur of cinematic masterpieces, I must confess that my anticipation for the live-action reboot of “How to Train Your Dragon” has been simmering like a Viking stew over a fire pit. Gerard Butler’s transformation into Stoick the Vast is nothing short of astonishing, and his tales of frostbite-inducing cold and 90lb costumes only serve to heighten my excitement.
Fans of “How to Train Your Dragon” are eagerly anticipating Gerard Butler’s portrayal of Stoick the Vast in the upcoming live-action remake. However, Butler has hinted at a performance that stays true to his animated character. Directed by Dean DeBlois, who was also behind the original animated version, this live-action reboot will follow the same storyline and bring the dragons to life using computer-generated imagery (CGI).
In an interview with Collider to publicize his latest film, “The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland”, Gerard Butler opened up about the grueling physical conditions while shooting the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon” in Northern Ireland during winter. He described it as being extremely cold and quite unpleasant.
In the cartoon adaptation, Stoick the Vast is a massive Viking with broad shoulders and a round belly, sporting a long beard. His appearance suits animation perfectly, as Gerard Butler doesn’t bear much resemblance to his animated counterpart. However, the actor has disclosed the extensive use of costumes and prosthetics that transformed him into Stoick, proving to be a blessing against the harsh cold conditions. In his words:
As a captivated observer, let me share my impression: “I boasted seven robust layers, each one thick enough to withstand the harshest winter chills. A voluminous beard adorned my face, and upon my shoulders, I carried a heavy pelt – though I’m unsure if it belonged to a bear or a wolf. Regardless of its origin, it was as cumbersome as any load one could carry.
Instead of feeling chilly like his fellow actors with smaller roles, Gerard Butler found himself sweltering under his bulky costume, which felt more like a sauna during the winter filming sessions. Although it certainly spared him from freezing, the intense heat produced by the costume did create some issues with his makeup and beard. “My beard keeps falling off due to sweat,” he admitted. “I just have to push it back into place. My eyebrows are constantly coming loose too – I had to keep putting them back in place because I was sweating so profusely.
Fans Are Divided About the Live Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Reboot
A few days ago, the initial snapshot from the real-life adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” was unveiled, sparking a split in the fan community. The picture features Mason Thames portraying Hiccup, equipped with a helmet, shield, and sword within the training arena. While numerous fans are thrilled about this live-action representation of their cherished character, not all are equally convinced.
As with all live-action remakes of beloved animated projects, some fans are questioning the need for a direct adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon at all. The original animated film is hailed as one of DreamWorks’ greatest of all-time (along with the recently released The Wild Robot). As a result, fans are understandably defensive about the film getting the live-action treatment, especially when it has so rarely worked for other animated powerhouses (like Disney) in the past.
Perhaps someday, “How To Train Your Dragon” might demonstrate the art of creating live-action versions that honor its original animated charm. For now, we can only engage in thoughtful discussions about what could potentially happen.
