‘Ghost of Tsushima’ is Getting Its Own Anime Series From Crunchyroll

The popular video game “Ghost of Tsushima,” developed by Sucker Punch in 2020, is broadening its horizons. Following its successful launch, a live-action film has been announced to be underway, with Chad Stahleski – director of “John Wick 4” – at the helm. More recently, the official Sucker Punch Twitter account disclosed that an anime series inspired by “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends” is in production, aiming for a release in 2027. Anime Entertainment Company Aniplex will be responsible for the adaptation, and Crunchyroll has been selected to distribute it.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is an upcoming multiplayer game available on both PS4 and PS5. It offers a unique experience centered around grandiose, mystical samurai encounters. Designed for cooperative play, it focuses on teams of two to three samurai, with engaging “legends” being narrated as players progress through various objectives that follow the game’s narrative. The Japanese animation style perfectly complements the game’s aesthetic, making this upcoming release even more enticing.

As per Crunchyroll reports, Takanobu Mizuno – famed for directing the hit Star Wars Visions Season 1 episode “The Duel” – will helm the upcoming series. The production of this project is being supervised by the renowned animation company Kamikaze Douga, best known for their work on “Batman Ninja.” In collaboration with Aniplex, they aim to assemble a talented team to breathe life into this series. Here’s to hoping they do the source material proud!

‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Has Plenty of Potential for Franchise Building

Ghost of Tsushima boasts a promising future, extending beyond movies and animation into its original video game realm. Not long ago, PlayStation Direct unveiled Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to the initial game, set centuries after Tsushima. The recurring “Ghost” title being bestowed upon a new character hints that this series could be an anthology. This structure might open doors for additional narratives centered around the title in diverse mediums and timeframes.

The world of video game adaptations is bursting with excitement and novelty, and it’s equally captivating to witness animation as the medium driving this transformation. For instance, “Cyberpunk Edgerunners,” a production by Studio Trigger and Netflix, unfolded an exclusive narrative within the Cyberpunk game’s universe and garnered positive reviews. Similarly, Crunchyroll and Aniplex can now explore and broaden the game’s lore with “Legends,” crafting fresh tales that mirror the approach taken by “Edgerunners” in its storytelling.

The “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends” anime is yet two years away, but its potential within the video game world is being recognized by film and television industries. Many captivating narratives have been woven through games, and this presents numerous chances to transform them into breathtaking new mediums. By utilizing Japanese animation, “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends” could be reimagined in a fresh, engaging manner for both new viewers and existing game enthusiasts, offering them a unique perspective on the series’ mythology.
