Gladiator 2 Cast Praise Ridley Scott’s Epic Vision for His Roman Return

As a movie enthusiast and an admirer of cinematic greatness, I must say that Ridley Scott is nothing short of a modern-day titan in the world of filmmaking. His ability to breathe new life into iconic franchises like Gladiator II is truly remarkable. The way he effortlessly commands the respect and admiration of his cast members, including legends like Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen, speaks volumes about his genius as a director.

Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, and Paul Mescal have been expressing their admiration for Ridley Scott, director of Gladiator II. The three accomplished actors attended the movie’s first major screening on the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles last Friday, and despite his absence, they spoke highly of him. Denzel Washington shared during a Q&A session that Ridley “constructed Rome.” When asked why he chose to be part of the sword-and-sandal sequel, Denzel simply replied (as reported by Variety): “[I joined] because Ridley Scott built it.

“It’s Ridley. It’s Gladiator. It’s: ‘Yes.’”

In the original Gladiator (2000), Washington wasn’t present, but his character Macrinus significantly contributes to the upcoming sequel. Interestingly, Washington and Scott have a long history together, having worked on 2007’s American Gangster, where Russell Crowe, who portrayed Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, also played a role. When it was time for Washington to embody the ambitious Macrinus in Gladiator II, he found the transition smooth, largely due to Scott’s involvement. During a recent Q&A session, Washington remarked that this collaboration was effortless.

He laid the foundation of Rome, leaving us to simply don our attire and engage in conversation. It was a game, you know, enjoyable. Just slip into the costume and step out. That’s how I perceived it. I felt like, here I am, wearing this dress, these accessories, and going wild.

Ridley Scott Receives Nothing but Praise from His Stars

Initial responses to “Gladiator II” have been encouraging, and some even hint at potential Oscar recognition, notably for lead actor Denzel Washington. Interestingly, Connie Nielsen found reprising her role as Marcus Aurelius’ daughter effortless due to Ridley Scott’s directorial expertise. During the same Q&A session following the screening, the actress playing Lucilla commented:

In comparison to 25 years ago when setting up would take three hours, it now only requires 20 minutes, even with 3,000 extras, massive equipment, and intricate setup details. This astonishing speed leaves us in disbelief.

During the production of “Gladiator II,” Paul Mescal found himself taking on the challenging role of depicting Maximus’ grown son, Lucius. Sharing much of the spotlight with his character’s mother, Lucilla, Lucius also finds himself in a power struggle against Macrinus, played by Washington, who seeks to manipulate the young warrior for his own purposes. However, Mescal admitted feeling quite apprehensive when he learned that he would be collaborating extensively with both Washington and Scott. During the Q&A session following the screening, Mescal further explained this anxiety.

I was puffing on a cigarette while we were walking about the area, when suddenly Ridley entered with a cigar in hand and took a seat. I was utterly terrified, and he asked, ‘Are you nervous?’ He then said, ‘Your fear doesn’t matter to me.’

Similar to Washington and Nielsen, Mescal also had an enjoyable experience collaborating with Scott. Initially, there might have been some apprehension due to working with such a high-profile Hollywood figure, but that soon subsided. In appreciation for the collaboration, Mescal complimented Scott highly, even referring to him as a friend. Furthermore, he spoke fondly of the Gladiator veteran.

This movie carries the tradition of the original film with great respect and dignity, a task fittingly accomplished by none other than Ridley Scott. As a friend and long-time admirer of his, I believe it ranks among his most impressive works that I’ve recently witnessed.

The sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II,” isn’t set to hit theaters until November 22, yet director Ridley Scott is already contemplating “Gladiator III.” This indicates that the Oscar-nominated filmmaker shows no signs of slowing down in his distinguished career. At 86 years old, he has a dozen other projects in various stages of development, following 2023’s “Napoleon” and 2021’s “House of Gucci.” However, “Gladiator II” seems likely to garner more positive reviews from critics than Scott’s recent creative endeavors.
